I took 3 years in high school and found it to be easy (unlike math), and ended up studying a bit more on my own after school. I've heard some people here saying a foreign language in college is really hard, esp when compared to high school level. Is a minor in German worth the effort for someone like me majoring in Economics?

I took 2 years of French in high school, and I'm trying to decide if I want to minor in it in college. I've only taken one class so far, the basic beginner one, but it was really easy (just more demanding than the hs ones).

Doesn't econ involve a lot of math?

There really isn't too much math at the undergraduate level. My emphasis is in Economic History, so I don't cover much math beyond Calc I, Stas, and Econometrics.

If you have the language basics, foreign language in college is not too difficult. I think people have trouble when they try to begin a new language for the first time with tons of new vocab and grammar in a class that usually meets five days per week.

You can probably bypass the first couple of language acquisition classes, which may not count towards the major/minor anyway. My son is taking a double major in engineering and german...so far, so good!

Actually my foreign language classes are my easiest, and they're usually more fun too. There's much less work and reading, but I'm still in the language/grammar/composition part of it as opposed to literature/culture/etc. I took four years of French in high school and one so far in college.

One of the things I'm lookig forwards to in college is forgetting my french.

Ich liebe Deutsch.

Unfortunately, my college doesn't offer it. But then again I don't need a foreign language for my major. I might take a Spanish course at the local community college sometime to have it on my resume though.

If you really like it I'd minor in it. It can't hurt to have a good knowledge of a different language. If you ever do overseas business with Germany or other German speaking countires, it would be to everyone's benefit to have you on board.

Have any of you ever taken Italian? I'm thinking of taking it this fall at NYU? Is it supposed to be a difficult language?

i'm taking spanish but I would like to learn french..

is it possible to start a new language in college? i'm majoring in engineering btw!

Italian is a relatively easy language to learn. I'd say slightly harder than Spanish.

If you'll were to begin taking a foreign language class, which would you choose? Why?

French. But thats because my family speaks French.

On my own I would probably choose Spanish because a) I live in CA and
b) South America is just too cool.

Does anyone here thing Spanish would be worth learning just because it's pretty much the language of southern and western USA?

Billhpike- HAHA i've already done that. I can't say anything, i can only read very limited French. Je ne parle pas francaise! WOOT. I already know another language and is working on another one anyways so I don't need french...

I'm gonna learn japanese. I already know some but i can mostly only hear.

Does anyone know online where I can go to get german audio and video?

I would actually recommend you take Chinese.. I think statistics put it at half the world speaking it? As China will inevitably (as it seems now) become the next economic superpower, knowing Chinese will benefit you a lot.

And if you do take Chinese, take Mandarin and not one of the gazillion dialects out there.

What exactly are you looking for, kinglin?

I know a lot of German news websites in such, but is there a way to get german video?

I know of a German TV news program that is on late at night here in the USA. It is called Deutsche Welle. You can get live video, video on demand, radio, etc at the website:
