Foreign Language

Say If I've taken French in HS, am I allowed to sign up for French I at Cal first semester?

I don't think so. I think they make you go into at least 2 or 3. Some do it, fail placement tests or pretend they're dumb to boost the GPA. Please don't do that.

sure you can. Why not take the course, and earn an easy A? Or, if its been three years since you've had the foreign language, repeating Fr 1 is not a bad idea as a refresher.

Placement Guidelines for Enrolling in French Language Courses at Berkeley
SIGNING UP FOR FRENCH 1-4, 13, 14, 35 AND 102 DURING THE TELE-BEARS ENROLLMENT PERIOD IS VERY IMPORTANT SINCE STAFFING COMMITMENTS FOR THESE SECTIONS ARE MADE ON THE BASIS OF PRELIMINARY ENROLLMENT REPORTS. Students who wait until the beginning of the semester to decide that they want to take French may find it more difficult to get into sections.

The most up-to-date course schedule for French is posted on a bulletin board outside of 4125 Dwinelle Hall. Students are responsible for checking on the up-to-date schedule information during Tele-BEARS, during the week before classes start, and during the beginning of the semester.

ATTENDANCE IN FRENCH 1, 2, 3, 4, 13, 14, 35 AND 102 IS MANDATORY EVERY DAY OF THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES. STUDENTS WHO MISS THE WHOLE FIRST WEEK WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS, AND ANY CLASS WORK NOT TURNED IN ON TIME DURING THAT PERIOD WILL NOT BE COUNTED. Students are responsible for verifying their correct enrollment in, or dropping from, French courses on a timely basis via Tele-BEARS.

IF YOU WISH TO ADD OR CHANGE INTO A FRENCH SECTION, ATTEND THE COURSE. ALL ADDS AND WAITING LIST SIGN-UPS ARE DONE ON TELE-BEARS BY THE STUDENT.

**Placement Guidelines
French 1: If you have never studied French before, or you have taken 2 years or less of high school French, sign up for French 1. Enrollment is limited. If you cannot get in on Tele-BEARS, sign up on the waiting list and attend the course.

French 2: Sign up for French 2 if you have a passing grade in French in a first-semester college French course, or three years of high school French. If you are unsure of your ability to take this course, see one of the department's lower division placement advisors.

French 3: Sign up for French 3 if you have a passing grade in French 2 at UCB or four years of high school French. New students who have taken second- or third-semester college French courses elsewhere or received an AP Literature score of 3, should also enroll in French 3; they will be screened for appropriate placement during the first week of classes. If you are unsure of your ability to take this course, see one of the department's lower division placement advisors.**

French 4: Open to students with a passing grade in French 3 at Berkeley. New students who have taken a fourth-semester college French course elsewhere or received an AP Literature score of 4, should also enroll in French 4. They will be screened for appropriate placement during the first week of classes. If you are unsure of your ability to take this course, see one of the department's lower division placement advisers.
