I am not good at my foreign language at all. I’ve been getting C-s and Cs for three years of the same language. If I drop spanish junior year (leaving me with 3 years total of foreign language), will that hold me back of being admitted into schools such as Uconn Umass Rutgers etc? I just feel like need to save my GPA from those Cs in junior year.
I know someone who got accepted to U.Mass Amherst and several comparable schools (UVM, U.Colorado,…) with only two years of Spanish.
PHEW ? thx
You can google the common data set of any college you are interested in and look at section C to see the required/recommended HS coursework for that school.
Note that when a college says they want 3 years of a foreign language it means that they want students to go through level 3 of the language in HS.
Note that colleges may have foreign language graduation requirements that are higher than their admission requirements.
i thought that junior high foreign language counted as one year, no? (At least for my school idk) 6-8th grade spanish counts as one year of spanish, and i took spanish freshman and sophomore year.
If you finish level 3 with a C you have “three years” and you meet the requirements at most flagships and at LACs outside top 50.
Are you in mostly honors classes? Will you have precalculus or Calculus by the time you graduate high school?
Talk budget with your parents: you can’t be instate for UMass AND Rutgers. Costs are the #1 criterion for establishing the college list.
Get a book such as Princeton review’s best colleges and find 20 colleges you hadn’t heard of AND that you like.
The three colleges you mention require only two years of foreign language for purposes of admission. That means finishing high school level 2 of a language, and thus one can complete that requirement by starting language in middle school and finishing high school level 2 in freshman year of high school. So, except for the grades that you are getting, which are not a plus factor, having three years is fine for purposes of admission to those colleges. Nevertheless, other colleges may be different and you should check any to which you intend to apply, and, as mentioned above, you should check what potential college level requirements you might have at each college you apply to before making a final decision, e.g., the college may require two college years of a language to graduate but might waive that if you finish level 4 of a language in high school.
I’m in NJ, so i’m in of state for rutgers. I’m taking 4 honors/AP courses junior year, and i plan on taking AP calculus senior year. My purpose for dropping foreign language is to save my GPA for junior year, and from what i’m hearing it won’t abolish my admission chances? ps Thx for the info!
