I have a question regarding foreign language requirements for the top schools (HYP, top 40) - I'm a junior and this year I'm temporarily dropping foreign language due to a conflict in schedule w/ my AP US History class, which obviously is more important so I decided to drop the non-honors language. My dad though, keeps on pestering me like a moron to have me study for the regents test at the end of the year, even though I'm close to crying because of all the work my other important classes entail, and his pestering is extremely hurting my desire to pursue German anymore, and I wont in senior year if I have another class conflict w/ APs.

How important, when viewed in isolation, is the foreign language item? I took HS Course German 1 in 8th grade and took german up to 10th grade, and got consistent 95's in it. It's a non-honors course though, as theres not enough interest in german at my school to add an honors or AP course for that class, along w/ not enough money. Any comments on the foreign language scenerio? Thanks

Most colleges want at least three years of a foreign language, and selective universities usually want four. HYP recommend four years of a language.

It seems to me that you're mostly worried about racking up AP courses. Bad approach! A foreign language class may not be AP, but that doesn't mean it's less important. If you have a schedule conflict, I suggest taking it at a local CC.

^ good idea, didnt think of that, lol. Well the fact though is that my school offers almost no AP's, and so It was either AP or language, and I didnt want to look like I was taking it easy w/ no AP's since the schools language course was only a non-honors easy-A course. I still think I made the right choice in favor of course rigor, but I guess if the situation permits I will take it some other time. My guidance counseler said she would be mentioning that I didnt skip the year of german in order to take more AP's, but because of a class schedule conflict with a course I really loved and excelled at. (i would have gone mad in honors US - its simply a moron class at my school) Right now I have 3 Foreign Language credits/years so I already fufilled the requirment for those schools though.

Local CC or university is the way to go. Or independent study. I did both. I needed three years of the same foreign language to get the "advanced" diploma from my district (and colleges do like it). I took AP French as a high school freshman and AP French Lit as a sophomore, and there were no classes beyond that, and I still needed another year. So I took a grad class in medieval French lit at the local university.

Then my district decided that that didn't count because the professor wasn't certified to teach high schoolers. Grr. So I took a year of independent study. I sat in the back of a French 2 class and read French plays and novels and newspapers, and wrote a report once a month on what I was reading for the teacher.

^ wow, that's pretty impressive. I'm not sure I have the time to enroll in a full out course currently due to extracurricular and other commitements, but so do you think If I proceed on w/ German 5 next year it will not look like I'm trying to scurry out of it? Because personally I like german. Or would u still recommend something like an online course?
