How important is four/five years of a foreign language to colleges? I got a call today from my counselor. I'm about to start junior year, and apparently AP Chemistry and Latin 4 are during the same period and I have to choose one. AP Chem was probably the only AP science I'd want to take. I could take AP Chem as a senior, but then I don't see how doing well on the AP Exams in May would even impact my chances of getting into college, because you fill out applications before that, right?

How important is it to have more than three years of a foreign language? Latin blows, anyway.

Hopefully it's not too important. My school offers Spanish as its only language, and if that's not bad enough, they only offer 1 and 2 (1 is only available to juniors and 2 is only available to seniors because they are graduation requirements).

4 years of a language is kind of important...5 isn't as bad though. I guess it depends what you want to major in. Also, an LAC is probably gonna care more about taking a language than a science school.

Yikes. My school doesn't offer ANY language courses, but does allow its students to take college courses in their junior/senior years. As a rising senior I've taken two semesters of college Russian and will probably continue this fall... How will colleges look at my situation?

Hm, I'm only taking 3 years, but I plan on going into engineering, so I don't think it'll matter too much. I may take a German or Japanese course in college though.

It probably won't be a huge deal to not have a language, but AP scores also aren't super super important either. Check the requirements for the schools you're looking at now- see if they care about AP scores more than language. And I'd think about these questions... Which class would you like more? Which class is more challenging?

If you can take AP Chemistry as a senior, then I would take Latin.

When you say Latin 4, you mean the fourth year you will be taking Latin, right? I have a similar issue. Guidance in my school refuses to admit that Spanish 4 is your fourth year. We take a language 7th/8th which is the equivalent of Spanish 1, then 2-5 every year in high school. I wanted to drop Spanish after Spanish 4, thus having 4 years of a language so I could double up in science as a senior (AP Chem/AP Physics) because I will be a science major in college. What should I do!? If I drop Spanish, guidance will see it as 3 years in a language; will colleges see Spanish 4 as a fourth year?
