Foreign Language

Hello, I am currently a senior and have committed to USC. I took AP Spanish (one of the toughest AP's at my school) in 11th grade (last year) and received an A both semesters and a 5 on the AP exam. I was hoping that this would allow me to not have to take any more Spanish courses in college.

However, after taking the online Foreign Language Placement Test, I was placed in Spanish Semester 3 (the highest level, I believe?) I am not a native speaker, but I am conversationally fluent. I'm sure my knowledge of higher vocabulary words has gotten a bit rusty...but I worked so hard in Spanish throughout high school that I had hoped place out in college.

Is there any chance that if I spoke to an advisor about it, that I wouldn't have to take a Spanish course next fall?

Thanks in advance!

I believe you can take an in person placement exam that will let you pass out of the third semester of a language (thereby competing the requirement). I think AP Spanish will also pass you out of the requirement, though I’m not 100% positive on this.

A score of 5 on your AP Spanish exam is granted credit for the third semester language requirement

akalboy is correct that students (who did not complete their requirement with an AP score of 4 or 5) can also take a paper and pencil placement test if they feel they can place higher than into the third semester.

alamemom- so even though the online placement test placed me in spanish semester 3, my AP score overrides it?

That is as high as the online placement test goes (so don’t think that you didn’t do well!). No one places higher than that on the online test - only the paper-and-pencil test can place you out of semester three (OR, of course, a score like yours on the AP exam).

Check with the counselors at orientation, of course, but I am pretty sure you are done with Spanish.

thank you SO much, you are ALWAYS sooo helpful :)

It’s my understanding that if you receive a 4 or 5 on the language AP, that you are not even required to take the placement test.
I don’t think it was necessary.

sequoia – yeah…i found out AFTER i took it  that’s why i was kind of freaking out, but i’m definitely going to talk to my adviser about it!
