Foreign Languages at UMICH

I was wondering whether or not I should take Chinese or German. I am very interested in both. What are peoples experiences with the four intro classes of both (ASIANLAN101-202, GERMAN 101-232). Do you actually become good at Chinese from 4 semesters worth? I heard good and bad things about learning each language. Please share your experiences. :)

I started German this year. The whole program is great. Every other student I talked to liked it as well. The teachers seem to genuinely care about their students (which is rare). The only con is that some of the teachers can be kinda intense. You are expected to speak only in German the majority of the time in 101 and all the time in 102.

I don’t know anything about the Chinese program.

I’m interested in Chinese as well, I heard it’s hard, the syllabus for 101 also looks like the class will be pretty tough.
