I only want people who know this answer for sure, because i continously get mixed responses from counselors etc.... I completed 2 semesters of spanish in HS. 1a and 1b. The Igetc requires 4 semesters if you are using your high school coursework. My question is do i only need to take spanish 2 at cc, since i already satisfied my 1 yr? Or do i need to start over and take spanish 1 and 2 at cc? Answers are appreciated. Thanks.

It depends I think on the policies of your community college. At mine 2 years of HS Spanish is equivalent to our Spanish 1. And 4 years of Spanish in HS is equal to Spanish 2 at my CC.

You should speak with a FULL-TIME counselor and find out how many years of high school is equivalent to what Spanish classes. I stress the FULL-TIME counselor because part-timers often give out wrong information.

If you want the best info, speak with a transfer counselor. They’re the gurus.

You need to take higher than HS Spanish 1.

The only way I was able to get out of taking Spanish at my CCC, was because I passed the Spanish Language and Spanish Literature examinations.

According to the IGETC: High school coursework equivalent to 2 years with a grade of “C” or better in the last semester of the 2nd year.

How many semesters do you normally have to take at CC if you didn’t take a foreign language during high school?

One semester

If you want to transfer to a UC, it’s 2 semesters.

^
Agreed. [:

hmm, i only took one semester. i’m positive my counselor told me i fulfilled the requirement. now i’m a little nervous,

I am pretty positive you only need one semester to fulfill IGETC but there is a catch, at least at my CC. For instance, DFST 102 fulfills IGETC but you need to take DFST 101 before DFST 102. Technically, you only needed 102 but 101 was required to take 102. Hope this makes sense.

i took 2 years of Spanish in HS. i didn’t take any Foreign Language at my CCC. ucla didn’t require me to send in my HS transcript. so, as far as they know, i didnt take any Foreign Languages. but i still got accepted. maybe this helped. maybe it didnt.

My CCC requires two semesters of HS foreign language to take care of that UC requirement.

&& I didn’t report that I had taken foreign language at my CCC either or at high school, but I did say that I was being certified for IGETC this Spring, and part of IGETC states that foreign language requirement.

2 semesters or 2 years? Because that makes a significant difference.

2 years of Foreign language at HS = 1 semester at CC

I took 1 year of Spanish in high school also. I saw my counselor the other day, and she told me to bring in my HS transcript. The 1 year I took in HS will clear Spanish 1A at my CC, so I would only need to take one semester of Spanish 1B to fulfill IGETC. However, like Rattus89 said, it depends on your school’s policies. Check with your counselor =p

I am planning to take a foreign language course during the fall of 2009. I am also applying Fall 2009. What will I put on my application? When do I have to finish my IGETC by if I plan to transfer by Fall 2010?

I took 2 years of Spanish in high school and haven’t taken any language courses in my years at a CC. I put in my application that I took the two years and I was told by counselors that it completed that requirement. I was told to send in my high school transcripts with my CC one to confirm it. A couple of my friends are sending their transcripts in because they did the same thing I did, though maybe one or two have another year of it in high school.

I assume it’s all fine since no mention was made that I should be taking another course and since they have accepted me already. And I sincerely hope its not an issue now…

Anyways, that’s my experience with the language requirement. I kind of wish I took mandarin though, might do it after I transfer.
