Foreign Service

Alright I'm facing a dilemma...

Should I do a PoliSci major if I intend to join the foreign service? I want more than anything for my career to be in the State Department's foreign service branch so I can go visit other countries and still help make a difference back at home. Plus it's a government job, which is always good.

My plan is to go to one of the better colleges in the state (Probably Winthrop) that I can actually afford for 2 years, and take all my 'required' classes that aren't part of my major. I then plan to transfer to a better college such as American or UNC Chapel Hill to do the actual major-related classes. That way I should be able to afford a degree at a better college without having to pay for the full 4 years. And if I do well enough in my 2 years at the local college, I might get a scholarship to the other one and not pay much more than at the first place.

Would a PoliSci major be a good choice if I plan to go to grad school for something relating to international studies/international relations? Or what other majors should I consider? And is my plan ok???

Polysci, history, economics, international relations are all reasonable majors for the foreign service. You must score well on the foreign service exam to be considered (you can check that out on the website for the US Department of State). While there you can also check out the Woodrow Wilson scholarships for students interested in working for the state department. these scholarships pay tuition at various schools around the country in return for service at the state department.
