*AMC12: School Topper (115.5) (First Attempt)

Jesus Christ.

MIT 100% in

the word whimsical was practically invented for adcoms of HYPMS. whether or not your get into those five, you're headed to a great school next fall and i hope that gives you the sense of reassurance that you're looking for.

Hey everyone!

I was rather surprised to see this thread was resurrected! But oh-well, I'm guessing all of you should know this now, before you go on to chance me (if you wish to, that is). The last 3 months were probably the biggest screw-up of my life. I overslept for an exam. (Prelim). Yes- you read that right. I SKIPPED a Prelim because I just couldn't wake up and I was awarded a Fail grade for the subject. So now, my MIT and Stanford (and basically all other applications) have my glaring school rank- >100! And, I guess there goes my MIT dream... and I guess that 2 extra hours of sleep that day put my dreams to sleep forever... Coz as far as I've heard, MIT and all the other top-notch schools aren't too kind when it comes to students with a bad academic record. Anyways, let's just keep our fingers crossed and pray that the best happens. And thanks everyone for all the positive feedback all along plus the constructive criticism and advice all through this year! Hope that you guys go reach the stars and achieve more than what you aspired for.

Yours
100%Tuna

So, what do I have now? Everything as it was- but my predicted changed to an ugly AAAA C or D (though I've been getting Bs and As for the subject previously- but the school rule is that you can't push the Predicted beyond three grades of the Prelim grade) and a school rank of >10%. Damn.

I have a question- thought i'll just ask it here- for UC Berkeley (as for all other UCs)- do we NOT need to submit high-school grades and transcripts and recommendation letters? As far as I can see, the whole thing is online and there's no space for anything. All they ask about is the subjects you take, CCAs etc. etc. etc. PLEASE HELP OUT! The deadline's 30th November! HELP! Thanks in advance! (:

in your school >100 is just out of 10%. in my school (NUSHS, you should know what that is) we have 80-ish people per level so go figure what that means for our ranks. top 10% = 8 people, i.e. the precocious kids who can do calculus in their sleep at age 2 (exaggerating of course).

so don't worry so much, submit your apps to wherever you want to go and then see how it plays out. chances are your MIT dream is indeed dead but do apply to stanford (assuming you're not asking for aid), you may still have a chance.

well... that's painful! my school has around 800-900 odd people- so yeah, >100 is just out of 10%. I guess I'd be like the bottom 10 if I was at NUS High and skipped an exam! (it's super-damn-competitive, right?) yeah... still submitting my apps- just hoping for the best... will try putting the exam-oversleeping blunder in an extra essay or something!

Srrinath: I think I just added you on Facebook! (:

I'm out of top 10%, but my school reports in quartiles [I'm from Srinath's school] And btw, big lol at oversleeping for an exam.

umm... thanks Fiona! I see sympathy oozing out of that LOL! Haha! My school's a bit anal- they report EXACT ranks... so that's (sigh) bye bye TOP SCHOOLS and Yo! NUS for me!

I think oversleeping is epic own. My roommate used to do that, but she always produced an MC and took the exam the next day -.-

Your best hope would be for the A-level results to be released as early as possible then rush your results to the admissions office of the various schools =p

fiona, your roommate used to oversleep?! and i thought it was just the yr 5s doing retard stuff like that.

and to the rest, yeah fiona's a good example of people out of the 10th percentile who're going to get into top places (i'm guessing MIT will accept). i'm pretty sure the SAT scores of my graduating class's top 10% won't come within 100 points of her score. and neither will many of the non-GPA portfolios. it all depends on how much weight they put into even taking GPA into consideration when most if not all of our graduating classes are top-tier level. i mean i've had GPA averages like 3 point something on a scale of five, but i'm doing fine in all other aspects. so you never know.

one can only pray that adcoms know how to make sense of your school (in the case of NUSHS, that prayer had better be a long and hard one).

Fortunately for you, in the end you will probably end up somewhere superb even after the prelim disaster. Be a bit more optimistic and work towards your goals! :)
