Foreing Language class conflict

Hi everyone, I have a little dilemma in my hands and I was wondering if anyone could give me some good advice. I am going to be a senior this coming school year. I wanted to take both AP French IV and AP Computer Science, but apparently the two classes are only offered once and during the same period. So basically I have to choose one of the classes to take. The problem is that I currently have 3 years of French (French I Honors - French III Honors), and I'm not sure if it would look bad if I just stopped taking French my senior year. On the other hand, I'm planning on majoring in Computer Science in college, and I thought that taking AP Computer Science would look nice on my application, plus I would enjoy the class very much.

I'm planning on applying to Stanford, USC, UCLA, Berkeley, Brown, Columbia, and a few other very good colleges. Would taking only 3 years of foreign language hurt my chances of making it into any of those colleges (even if they only require 2 or 3 years of foreign language).

Since you will be taking the same number of APs either way, I don’t think either would be a deal-breaker. I know someone going to Dartmouth who didn’t take AP language senior year.

As with most questions such as yours there isn’t a single answer. Best is to review the requirements of each college on your list, and when in doubt, to ask the respective college admissions office.

For example, for Stanford 3 or more years is recommended. The implication is clearly that 4 is best. Although I realize that MIT is not listed on your post, if you were to apply there 2 or more years is recommended.

Some colleges have a foreign language proficiency requirements. You can meet that by taking the AP exam and scoring (typically) at least a 4. Or they may have you take a placement exam to determine whether or not you need additional coursework. For these colleges you may find that you’ll need to take language course during your college years.

If you do end up taking CS instead of French, make sure that your guidance counselor notes the scheduling conflict in the GC reference letter.

If your major is CS then AP CS is the better AP to have on your transcript.

Is there a nearby high school in your school district that you can drive over to take an AP French class that won’t conflict with your schedule?

Hi guys, thanks so much for the replies. I’m sorry I didn’t have a chance to respond until now, but it seems like from the replies that taking CS would be a better choice. @Batllo, unfortunately there is no high school within 15 minutes of our school; I wouldn’t be able to drive there and back to take a class during the school day, nor would I be able to do so at the end of the school day due to after school activities that I must attend.

Anyways, so just for reassurance, a missing 4th year of AP foreign language would not drastically alter my chances of getting into a college? Gaah I’m just so nervous about screwing this all up because of one class.
