I applied to ERAU for the Fall 2016 as a forensic psychology major. I know it’s a newer major and the school is known for his aeronautics. I applied because forensic psychiatry is my career choice and I love the major requirements. ERAU is one of the only schools with this specific major. If I get in, would it be worthwhile to go here for this major or should I stick to George Washington or USC for psychology and a minor in law and society or something similar?
First of all, I’m more or less personally opposed to attending a college solely on the basis of one major. College students change their minds so much (as they should!) and your interests may fluctuate over time. It’d be a shame to choose a college over one you liked better solely for the major, only to change your major later.
Secondly, college is about breadth, not so much depth. Forensic psychology is a field you really need a graduate degree to enter anyway - and if you want to be a forensic psychiatrist, you need an MD. SO I think you’re fine going to a school with a strong psychology department where you can take regular foundational psychology classes, and then going to grad school or medical school.
Also, USC has a major in law, history, and culture. It’s not exactly the same but it’ll give you some of the law classes you are looking for. GW has a major in criminal justice and other departments that you could take classes in to fill out your forensic interests.
However, if you just really like Embry-Riddle and you want to go there anyway, then you should go if you get in!
ERAU Prescott is a fantastic school, but I do agree with juillet that you should be aware of your options if Forensic Psychology doesn’t work out. Now, if your fallback was Aeronautics/Astronomy/Engineering then I would say ERAU Prescott would be a great fit. Otherwise, your options will be limited.
Great school though if you are dead-set on a major they offer!
