My daughter wants to take forensic science as one of her 3 years of required science. She has has Bio and Chem. Not much else interests her as far as anatomy or physics. If I let her take forensic science, will colleges not acknowledge it as a valid class? Not to say it's not valid, of course, but colleges can be so specific. She wants to apply to Stanford, UCLA, U. of Chicago, Wellesley. She is leaning towards a Psych. major or law school.

Look at the school requirements, but I think most colleges want a minimum of three years of science with all three being a lab science. I don’t think Forensics counts as a lab science.

The counselor might be able to answer questions about classes specific to your daughter’s school.

Hmm, not sure I’d do that. Particularly looking at schools like Stanford. My daughter is also not a math/science person but she did take 3 years of lab science - bio, chem, and earth. She’ll be taking math thru pre-calc this year as a senior.

this seems to satisfy most of the schools she is looking at - 3 years of lab science and 3 or 4 years of math. she will actually be taking a course in forensics next year, but I don’t think i would have let her had she not already had the 3 las courses. i’m a bit nervous she didn’t take physics, but at some point you have to stop constantly saying “what will look good for college”.

Nina- I gave up on my daughter’s counselor when I met with her and she told me she didn’t know what I was talking about when I referred to AP US History as APUSH. She told me she had never heard of such a thing. I knew right then that I was fighting this college battle alone! Then when I asked her what she would be able to do to help us through the college app journey, she told me it was my job to help my own child with that process.

Our tax dollars hard at work!

My D is taking forensics this semester and brain science second, one is considered a lab science at our school anyway, but she did have honors physics, chem and bio (notice she’s NOT doing any of those AP!). She got a 5 on AP Calc A/B but just does NOT like science.

My point in raising this was just that she actually wants to learn about this stuff and I just hate that requirements put the kibosh on kids learning for learnings’ sake.
