I'm currently a high school sophomore looking at colleges. I am really interested in majoring in forensic sciences. I would like to be a crime scene investigator/detective, and would like to go to school to focus on the science aspects more than the legal side of it. I was wondering, what is the best minor/double major to go along with it (psych, criminology, genetics, etc )? And what is the best college that can offer it? Thanks!

You should check out [Columbia College](www.goforgreater.org/wp/columbia-college?utm_campaign-FRM001&utm_id=FRM001). They are building a new, state-of-the-art science building on campus in Columbia, Mo. that will feature a lot of space for forensic science labs and study.

Here’s the [course requirements](http://www.ccis.edu/day/academics/degrees.asp?BSFS&utm_campaign-FRM001&utm_id=FRM001) for the Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science degree.

As far as double majoring, biology sounds pretty good for you if you want to keep the focus on science. A forensic science major will give you a lot of classes that count for both majors, so it might not take too much additional time to get the double major.

I know this is an older thread but look at these schools as well: Sam Houston State University, Texas State University, Louisiana State University, and University of Tennessee-Knoxville. SHSU, Texas State, and UT-Knoxville all have “body farms” and offer forensic anthro degrees. At those schools you will get field experience/research opportunities. LSU has the FACES lab that is a leader in facial reconstruction technology.

Crime scene investigators are police officers. Therefore you should plan on joining the police force of a major city. Most smaller forces just have regular officers sent for training to perform evidence technician functions. The requirement to join the force is tpyically either a AS, or BS in anything but I think the forensic degree in this case may make you an attractive candidate. However, I bleieve you will still have to start at the bottom like any police officer as a rookie then probably traffic control.

The people doing the labwork are technicians with a BS in Biochemistry or Chemistry.
