I've noticed a lot of people talking about speech and debate so I was wondering, how many people on CC are actually on a team? What league do you compete in? What category? What have some of your past topics/pieces been? Have you placed in anything? And of course, feel free to complain about stupid judges. ^_^

Our school has no such thing. We don't even have a Model Congress of U.N. I think such a club would be fun. C'est la vie.

My school has nothing like this either. I wish we did.

I've been involved in forensics for four years. I've done speech, debate, and student congress, and I'm the assistant captain of the speech team and the captain of the Debate team. I have a very big love-hate relationship with forensics because the judging in my league is the biggest bunch of crap ever.
I qualified for states for the past 3 years and broken into octo-final round in debate for Junior Varsity and finished off 12th in Varsity last year. I personally don't like LD-Debate anymore and I'm trying to find a way to slide out of it while still being a good captain. In speech I've done Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, and Duo Interpretation. I never went to states in Speech b/c I always went for debate, but I'm a 2 time national qualifier in Duo and hopefully, this year I'll make it there again. Speech isn't that big in my league, but I hear a lot about the teams in Texas and Illinois that are really hard core, I wish I could see the tournaments there.

I'm on my school's mock trial and debate teams and I'm a delegate on one model congress a year.

i just made distrinct with my poetry reading

im CAPTAIN of my school forensics team. i do impromptu and oratory......oh i dont like it anymore

I really haven't done much this year. I'm just so... burnt-out. It's a long story, but I'm really fed up with the judging system of my main event (oratory).

Anyways, I went to state for oratory, won some districts for storytelling, Student Congress, and Readers' Theater. I also do PuF (which I hate), poetry/prose, and interp. It was a huge part of my life the past 3 years.

Our school only does policy debate. Got three teams into elims at Berkeley, although I lost in partial triples. =)

Bah at State and Nationals. Haha.

freshmen and sophomore year I did declamation and uh. . . that didn't go so well. this year I'm doing original oratory, and I'm so glad I switched categories. we compete in Catholic league, and some people do the public league too. we have forensics, student congress, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and mock trial (which is pretty much a separate thing from all the forensics stuff)

I'm an International, so it's a bit different where I come from. I've Captain of my school's Debate Team. Won a number of National Debates, and a few International ones. Our format's very different though. It's more Oxford/Cambridge style, involving both policy and other types. I can sympathize with comments re: judging though.

Topics: Widely varied: The Media, Euthanasia, Capital Punishment, all sorts really.

Styles: Generally 2/3 Member and Extempore, though we also do Impromptu Speeches (topics are generally wacky (polka dots, toast), though speeches must be serious). Turncoat's also popular.

I'm also international, and the style here is very similar to what Shrivats describes. We go in more for two-member teams than anything else, and usually social/political issues.

I'm not going to comment on the number of times my accent has been a sticky point, though. It can get very tiring when one sounds nothing like the judges have ever heard before.

My school is a member of the OHSSL (Ohio league) and the NFL. We're fairly serious about it and have produced our fair share of state champs. I'm heading off to my third state and second national tournament this year. I love 4n6 lolll :-) I do Domestic Extemp/Congress plus a little interp here and there!
