Any info on the forensics teams of Andover, Exeter, Choate, Lawrenceville, Deerfield, SPS, etc would be amazing! Stats, reputations, experiences-- go for it.

Forensics as in speech and debate?

If yes, I’d like to know too!

All I know is that Exeter has a speech & debate team. Not sure about reputation & other schools.

[[ On a side note, I’d like to ask the same question about school newspapers. Which school, in your opinion, has the best? What are their reputations; what do they mainly write about, etc.

Also (maybe I should start a new thread o_o) which school has the most activism? Like would be most likely to have a rally devoted to, say, saving Darfur. Do urban schools have an advantage in this? ]]

Hotchkiss undoubtedly has the best speech and debate team in the nation and one of the best in the world. So if debate is your thing I would certainly look at Hotchkiss - best decision I ever made. Our captain came second in the world last year at the World tournament. We took the top debater for the third year in a row and we were the top american team for the bazillionth year in a row. We won internationals as the best american team yet again and one of our speakers came 4th overall. We came second at Yale MUN even though we competed against schools that train solely for MUN, we have come first 4 times in the past 6 years and second twice. This was a re-building year for us but we still swept the field. You cannot go wrong with Hotchkiss. The Vs as we call them - our coaches - are living legends they will turn you into such a great debater that you will surprise yourself with how much you improved. I came in as a total loser but by the time I left I was waaay better than when I came in.

A hotchkiss debate team captain came 2nd at worlds - that is for debate public speaking and a few other events combined. She was the best American at the tournament.

Another Hotchkiss captain finished 8th overall and 1st in the world for impromptu debate for the second year in a row.

Another Hotchkiss team member finished 21st overall - he got penalized for going over time otherwise he would have done better.

I suppose that’s why so many Hotchkiss alums go into Law … too bad not all of them make it to the supreme court - sorry Robert Bork.

Wowwww, thanks! That’s… amazing… and slightly intimidating… haha but I like it that way. :)

Does anyone know about any other schools, by any chance?

Thanks SO MUCH, kafkareborn! Unfortunately, I’m not looking into Hotchkiss for other reasons.

I second lemons. Also, could info on the speech part of forensics be supplied too? I’m mostly a speech person, not a debate-- although still open-minded. C:

Tuesdays- I googled this winter’s Yale tournament for you. I believe that only Connecticut schools were invited. As you can see, there are some pretty good public school debate teams out there as well!

Those resutls are not correct. I was talking about the Yale MUN if you read my post. And the Yale MUN results are divided into Best Big Delegation and Best Small delegation so those are obviously not the results. And it was not limited to Connecticut only - the winners Bergen County Academies are from New Jersey as they so enthusiastically declared when they won.

The only other debate at Yale that you could possibly be referring to is Osterweis which is ranked individually -which you failed to provide for obvious reasons - as well as as a team. Individually a Hotchkiss new girl came in second despite and another came in fourth despite our top debaters and our captains not attending since it was not a DANIES tournament and it was the end of the year when no one wanted to go all the way down to Yale - furthermore they were preparing for the World tournament which is the most important tournament in debate no other tournament matters really. So bearing that in mind we sent our younglings and paired one proficient youngling with one not so proficient youngling so they could learn. However everyone there is new to debate that year and one of them can’t even speak English properly. It was a training opportunity for us not a competition otherwise we would have sent in our big guns. Notice how Hotchkiss’ top debater at hte tournament is second over but 11th with her team mate - below even the other Hotchkiss team? If Hotchkiss’s top two hotchkiss debaters at that tournament had paired together they would have come in first, second or third but they did not and there is a good reason for that: Hotchkiss’s top debater at that tournament partner is not very proficient in english as I said- we did not go there to win obviously and we wanted kids who we would normally not have debating to have an opportunity to debate. So there is a good reason behind these results things are not always what they seem like particualrly if you hidew half of the results…

Anyhow any debater worth his/her salt will tell you the world results are paramount. Hotchkiss swept the worlds. The speech part of debate is done at Worlds and Internationals. It is there that you get to do public speaking and what not - it’s good fun.

(These are inidividual rankings I have removed the names though)

Thanks for the link and extra info Kafkareborn. I don’t doubt the brilliance of Hotchkiss’ debate team
Although I ammm a little affronted that you said speech was just ‘good fun’. It’s actually a very intense part of forensics in general and equally important with debate. Of course, I’m sure Hotchkiss’ speech is definitely great, being at Worlds and Internationals and whatnot.
