Can you tell me anything about the debate program? Majors? Classes? Clubs? Competition? Scholarships?
Thanks

katmandu,

Check your PM inbox for a reply. As you'll see, I provided you with the contact information of someone on the Forensics Team who will be more than happy to answer all of your questions.

From what I've gathered from friends on the team, it's actually a huge time commitment to be involved. With that said, their hard work has certainly paid off, judging by the team's impressive placements in recent tournaments.

Just saw this thread now. I'm a sophomore on the team, and the program encompasses both speech and debate in the National Forensics Association. The form of debate we do is LD-Policy and sometimes Policy, and we are also competitive in speech events. Some members will do only debate, only speech or both. There's a wide range of majors on the team (off the top of my head, we have everything from gov/law to computer science to geology), and we don't require a specific major (though we are affiliated with the gov/law department).

Our team becomes more competitive every year. Last year we were ranked fourth place in Division 1 at nationals, and as nationals approaches in a few weeks we're expecting to show some strong results. Unfortunately, we do not offer scholarships yet, but it is something we are looking into for future years.

Just thought this explanation would go well with Justin's post. He's right that the commitment is a big one, but it isn't overwhelming. You can still have a social life (I'm involved in a fraternity, and many on the team are active in campus activities); but at the same time, the harder you work the better you do. We're away for a few weekends each semester for tournaments, and we travel everywhere from New Hampshire to Texas, as well as places closer to the college. The work is fun, and in many ways you'll learn as much from the team as you will in your classes.

Let me know if you have any questions
