Is it true that princeton doesnt put much emphasis on freshman grades? i heard a rumor that they dont care for them. i suppose that poor frosh grades will mess up your class rank so it can affect you a lot. anyone wanna clear this up? sorry if this has been asked/answered already.

Freshman grades are included in your class rank, but not in your GPA (they recalculate it accordingly). I believe this is also true for Stanford.

How exactly do they calculate the GPA though. Do they weight?

yes! that is good, i did terrible (lots of b's) up till my 2nd semester of my sophmore year. of course my first semester will bite my *#$ but at least the frosh year is out. so wait, they will only see 2 and a half years of grades if you apply regular decision, is that enough to make a good judgement? i guess it is.

I'm pretty sure they calculate your unweighted GPA. This may be bad because you have a tough school, but they have an idea of how competitive your school is based on past applicants (unless you are the first).

When I went to Quest Scholars interviews at Harvard, they said most elite places, like Ivys and similar colleges, will not weigh your freshman grades heavily, and some won't even consider those grades.

Which is awesome, because my freshman GPA was garbage

The official policy is that they get to see them, but they say they will not consider them... I think they may at least look at them as a reference, but not penalize you for it. Which is really good because I actually got my one and only C as a frosh... College Prep English... I remember it well... I turned around and got an A the next semester but it is still there.. etched into my memory... I like my school.. It is nice we only give Semester grades... So whatever grade I get for the first nine weeks makes no difference... It is all about Semester grade... Tell me that isn't generous!

lol the worst grade related experience of my life was in frosh english. on our last major assignment for the quarter, the one that is worth a hundred points out of the 250 we had all together, we all did a project. so it was done and mine kicked butt! i was set. i relaxed then because i was done. it turns out, i had forgotten my name and was missing a major chunk of points from my class. of course she had just submitted grades when i found out so i was boned. i couldnt do anything. instead of the a i was going to get i got a c-. that lowered my semester grade down from an a to a b-. oh well #$%! happens what can you do? that was the ultimate suck. im hoping they look at my grades and see them as bad but rising to perfection. i hope they dont convert it to some number and simply toss my app out. oh well what can you do either way. i was pretty mad about that english bit for a long time though.
