Forgiving Colleges

I'm not trying to be rude here unwritten, but find another thread. "Only" 7 people out of 44 got into ivy's?? A 3.7 gpa is low?? My son's fairly well regarded public HS has probably 4 kids out of a graduating class of 250 go into the ivy's. A low gpa is under 3.3. Really, under 3.0 is low in the real world.

Unwritten02: You should probably worry a little less. If your school with under 50 kids per class regularly sends 7-8 kids to Ivies, I guarantee that it is on the radar screens of admissions people everywhere you care about. There are some similar-size schools in NYC that do a lot better than that, but not many elsewhere (and even if you're in NYC, not all that many there).

You must know where kids with your approximate class position were admitted this year, or last. Scuttlebutt isn't gospel, but it's often not such bad information either. I'll bet that you either know, or can find out with a few phone calls, any number of schools that would be good "safeties" or "matches" for you.

Here are some hints: If you are willing to consider state universities, many of them do most of their admissions off of a matrix of SAT and GPA figures, so great SATs will cancel out less-than-great GPAs. Maybe not Michigan or Berkeley, but probably places like Wisconsin, Texas, Arizona, Maryland, Penn State. It's pretty easy to figure out the matrices, and some of them even tell you. Also, I am sure that there are any number of LACs that admit kids from your school with your GPA, and while the SAT-GPA gap may give them pause, at the end of the day they won't hold it against you THAT much, especially the ones who care about their USNWR rankings.

I am sure you have plenty of classmates who wish they had your problem.
