my teacher didn't send my recommendation off & i know this because i saw my forms and stuff still sitting oh her desk and i missed the ED deadline for one of my schools thanks to it. we had a substitute so i wasn't able to confront her about it when i saw it still there. also i read the recommendation she wrote for one of my friends and it was horribly written. she had at least a month and a half to send it off and i asked her about 2 weeks before the deadline and she told me she was sending it off that week. i checked the status of my app and it said i had everything in except the recommendation. should i just ask another, more reliable teacher to write me one or just tell her to send it off now!

If you’ve already missed the deadline, it’s too late for you to get a rec from another teacher on such short notice. Contact admissions, explain what happened, and make sure you won’t be penalized - then talk to your teacher. Try to be diplomatic rather than accusative: “[college] told me they haven’t received your recommendation yet, and it needed to be in by [date], so I wanted to check in and make sure everything was all set…”

if i ask now, don’t you think they rec could make it in before the regular application deadline january 20???

Call the school IMMEDIATELY, as in tommorrow, and explain what has happened. Then ask if it is too late to send the recommendation. Better yet, have the teacher call immediately and explain. If necessary, the teacher may be able to fax it to the school in question.

I have had this happen to students in the past. Some schools have been more flexible about it than others, so you really need to ask directly and immediately, before assuming all is lost. Good luck!

Re your second question, if you decide to change from ED to RD (or if they say it’s too late to be considered as part of the ED pool), then yes, you’ve probably got time to get another letter.
