I'm extremely interested in applying to Fordham University. I'm pursuing the major of Communications and hope to be a News Broadcast Analyst once I graduate. What is the communications/journalism program at Fordham like? Is it as hard to get into as people say? Are there better options out there? I was considering Pace and St. John's as well; in your opinion what is the best communications school in NY?

Bump ^^ Anyone?

My daughter is a communications major, concentrating on journalism. I sent her an email with your questions. She probably won’t be able to tell you anything about any other schools because Fordham was her number one choice.

Here’s her reply:

“I’m not extremely knowledgeable about the broadcast journalism side of things since I’ve mostly taken classes that focus on the written element. But I do work for the department and know a lot of the professors. I’ve really enjoyed all of my communications classes and discussions I’ve had with professors outside of the classroom too. Most are pretty well-accomplished in the field; one professor used to be a producer for 60 Minutes, next semester I’m taking a course with Frank DiLella who is the theater reporter for NY1. I think it’s definitely worth getting in touch with the department head who can answer your questions as far as current (and upcoming) course offerings.”

If you want the name and email address of the dept chair, pm me.

Hi! I am currently in the communications program at Fordham and can give you an insight.

It is a GREAT program at Fordham. They have professors who have done some great things in the field and have great experience. They also bring in guest speakers who havea lot of experiences quite often. They also offer a lot of good things to do outside the classrooms. You realize real quick that New York City is the best place to be in the field and Fordham helps you take advantage of being there.

Communications is one of the strongest programs at Fordham. This is where Marshall MaCluan taught (considered the father of media communications “The medium is the message”). To get an idea of how the program does, please check out the Fordham Wiki site and look up Fordham people to get an idea of some interesting folks in media and broadcasting. My D just graduated with a major in communications and had 3 jobs waiting for her thanks to internships. Her favorate prof was Paul Levinson, who is really well known in the field. You can’t go wrong.

I’m reading with great interest about Fordham’s communications program since my D is considering it, specifically journalism. Any opinions about how it compares with Marist? I’ve been really impressed with the facilities at Marist, but Fordham seems to offer a great variety of courses in the com dept. Thanks.

Marist is a good school and she would get a good education there. Having said that, I have to be honest and say that Fordham has a much stronger and nationally known program in communications. If you seach the web, you will find it is listed as a top program.

In the end it is up to your daughter to do well in the field, where ever she decides to go. I can only attest that she would have an edge in Fordham’s communication program.
