Former CC member needs help finding school for brother

First of all, I'd like to thank the CC members for the help they provided me when I was applying to colleges back in 2008. I found the site immensely useful, and it helped me find a school that was right for me.

Now my little brother is in the midst of his college admissions process, and he's having trouble finding the right school for him. He's currently planning to major in Comp Sci and minor in music (he's a guitarist and would like to find a modern-ish program that focuses less on classical training and more on performance and composition).

He needs a small liberal arts school (say, under 5,000) in a mid-sized to large city with temperate weather (in particular, mild springs and summers), and an active music scene.

He likes to have plenty of free time and he doesn't like to stress out over schoolwork, so schools where students study really hard probably won't be great matches for him. Also, he took a number of accelerated courses but only one AP class (Music Theory)--in which he scored an overall 4, has a combined SAT score of 2000, an SAT II Math II score of 780, and a GPA of about 3.7.

If anyone has advice on match schools that fit his criteria and whose deadlines haven't already passed, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Those aren’t academic pursuits that are typical of liberal arts colleges.

Here is an old thread with LACs with CS: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/272149-liberal-arts-colleges-good-computer-science-program.html</a> I don’t know how to search IPEDS to get an updated data set. There should be a way to find schools that have a CS major and a music minor.

Skidmore College (NY) has computer science and music, a big arts scene there.
Saratoga Springs, a great college town. :)

Not only are his majors not a good fit for LACs, but few LACs are in mid to large sized cities. You may want to redefine the priorities here.

Very true, many LACs are in rural locations, not large urban areas!

The academic interests, the urban setting, the mild weather preference and the SAT scores would all seem to be a good fit for the U. of Miami, which has about 10,000 undergrads.

it isn’t that close to a city, but if he’s interested in music he may want to consider oberlin, where he can get a dual degree at the college and conservatory. though it’s suburban, it’s fairly close to cleveland, so that could be a good match school for him.

Carnegie Mellon is great for computer science and music and meets many of your other requirements. I’m not personally familiar with the school, though, and it’s possible that it may not be laid-back enough for your brother.
