Former student of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

I am a former student of TJHSST for some background information on what I'm talking about here is a USA news and rankings link to the schools page.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in ALEXANDRIA, VA | Best High Schools | US News

As you can see its ranked #4 in the country, but it is on the way down (used to be #1) since the good teachers retired, major changes, and etc.

So I dropped out after the 1st quarter of my sophomore year and I had harsh teachers the entire time, and my grades were rough. My GPA was 3.5 weighted because of the rigor of the school. I dropped and at my base school my GPA increased to 3.7 weighted. If I can continue to work well at my base school through Junior year and end up with a 3.85 will that seriously hurt my chances of going to a decent college? I'm not looking for Ivy league but I would like to go to UChicago, Mcgill University, Duke, or UC Berkeley. I have an internship and leadership positions at Two clubs and I am starting my own club junior year at my school. My projected SAT score is a 2200+. Is there any possibility I'll get in considering I am asian. My base school is Mclean High School which is very competitive as well being one of the higher ranked schools in the state and Top 100 in the nation.

Based on a cursory reading, it looks like you’ll have decent chances at all those schools. However, we’ll need a little more detailed information in order to chance you properly.
:)

Damn, what’s going on there? Im also from No. Va and one of my friends dropped out. He now goes to chantilly. I heard they had to send warnings to a lot of freshman for low grades.

3.5 at TJ is not bad but also depends on the difficulty of the courses you took. Also, a 3.7/4.3 is not enough for the schools your aiming. They will require 4.0+ even with a 2200+ SAT. As a reference I had 3.7 and 2200 SAT and got rejected from schools of that caliber I applied to except for one. Even if you go to Mclean, you need to get into the top 10% of your class.

Why not apply to tech and uva? Both are great and easier to get into since your instate.

Well some more information is that I am also planning on taking the ACT and hope to get a 32, I am good at Science and Math. I do a lot of volunteering and have 150+ hours and hope to accumulate more. I am trying to do other things to help my chances since my GPA is a bust.

I will apply to UVA and VTech but UVA is still hard to get into with my low GPA its in the same caliber as the other schools listed.

haha I turned down tj for falls church

UVA and VT are actually harder to get in to instate if you are from NOVA (Northern Virginia) People outside of NOVA have no idea. But that said, you should get into VT. UVA is a real reach. Make nice with your guidance counselors/teachers at Mclean - I’d drop ‘the story’ about TJ. People move, change schools all the time. No need to present/apologize with a story.

I wasn’t trying to use the I went to TJ story, I’m trying to find other ways to make up for it otherwise I wouldn’t have volunteered for 162 hours.

Duke: Reach
U Chicago: Reach (pay attention to your essays)
UVA: Reach (but lower than Duke or U Chicago; 3.8+ may turn it into a high match)
VA Tech: Safety (if you can get your GPA up to 3.8+)

Here are two questions that need answers before I can give a verdict for the remaining schools:

For Berkeley: what is your sophomore year GPA? (Berkeley doesn’t take in account freshman year)
For McGill: what major(s) are you interested in?

For Mcgill I’m interested in Biomedical Sciences and,
My sophomore year GPA is 3.98 weighted because of my one quarter at TJ. My junior year classes are things I am interested in and, I will probably get a Junior year gpa of 4.25 atleast, the AP’s I’m taking are easier as well.

Berkeley: Match (can you pay full-freight?)
McGill biomedical sciences: Safety at 3.7+ UW (without freshman year), high reach if 3.5 UW and below (it’s non-holistic unless you go through the waitlist process, in which case you may write an essay where you can mention ECs as well)

I hope that 4.25 materializes…

Here are McGill’s admission standards for Americans:

[Admissions Standards - U.S. High School | Applying to Undergraduate Studies - McGill University](http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/standards/unitedstates)

For Biomedical Sciences McGill wants an UNWEIGHTED gpa of 3.7+ and a SAT of 670+ for each subsection (both SATI and IIs) or an ACT of 30.

Fortunately for you McGill doesn’t really care about Freshman marks (I guess they figure many smart people screw up in their first year of highschool), so you should recalculate your gpa without the grade 9 grades. McGill admissions is very marks driven so if you can reach that 3.7 threshold and score about a 2100+ on your SATs you will get in. If you cant reach those thresholds you are in trouble.

With most Canadian universities, including McGill, you can usually tell whether you will be accepted or not before you apply.

If I have a B+ average for 10th grade does that mean I have no chance at all or can I make it up with an A average senior year or junior year and higher SAT scores.

My current scores in parenthesis and not in parenthesis are the minimum requirements:

SAT I
Critical Reading 620 (680)
Math 560 (740)
Writing 610 (630)
Essays (9/12)

SAT II
Ecological Biology 590 (700)
Physics 580 (720)

My bet is that if you can make up the grades in later years you should be ok, as long as your gpa is at or at least close to that 3.7 mark as you can when you apply you should have a solid opportunity to get in. You also have to raise those SAT scores to the minimums as well to have a good chance of being admitted.

Well my SAT scores are fine (they are above the minimum) the thing I am worried about is the GPA

whoops, sorry had the meaning of the parenthesis and not parenthesis scores confused. Also the minimum scores for Biological Sciences at McGill are an SAT I and II 670 for each scores. The scores you listed were the minimum to get into the university period. If your scores are below these your application will be binned without even being looked at. Biology wants scores above those minimum, a 670+ for each.

What about International Management and Finance at McGill?

McGill Desautels: Aim for 650+ on each SAT subscore and SAT2 (and 3.7+ UW without freshman year)
