Just curious, Case has sparked my interest so I decided to check Case's Forum. I only see 2 threads but each thread got pretty good feedback and tons of views. Why is that?

I guess people just havn't had many questions since a moderator last cleared the forum. If you have any questions though, I'd be happy to give my best shot at an answer..

Case-
Funny to find you here!!!
My younger son is applying to colleges now. Somehow, Case keeps coming up or I read something about it.
Not sure if it makes sense to apply (if he gets in he'll visit and see if he likes it, just like the other schools. Hard to know what is a good fit.)
I hate Chance threads, but in this case, is it even worth it to apply.
GPA- 3.82 (weighted with just 3 AP's so unweighted is likely similar)
ACT 31 with all parts in that range (28, 31, 32, 32)
Rank- 23rd percentile. (UGH)
Major- engineering or computer sci

Thanks for your help.

i have also have a chance responce:

Im not the brightest student and case is one of my reach schools so i had to apply early action to give my self a slight chance but here are my stats:

GPA: 3.6 unweighted (only 1 AP :( 3 AP's if you count my senior year)
SAT-Math-680 Critical Reading-550
Rank-93/221 (our school is ranked #1 in our region, so it is high competitive)
Major-Chemistry/maybe pre-med track
EC-pretty strong (2 sports, 3 clubs, hospital volunteer service, private landscape, and most importantly religious volunteer work is the one i spent the most of my time in)

Crazed,
wow, I've seen you around quite a but these days lol.
I would definitely encourage your son to apply with those stats. If his UW GPA is close to the weighted, as you say, then thats very good. The ACT score is also more than enough, I'm pretty sure a 31 is on the upper end of the middle 50% around here. The rank could obviously be improved upon, but I doubt its something that would keep your son out.

Snap,

I do think Case will be a bit of a reach for you, given your test scores are on the low side. Still, you never know what will happen, college admissions are crazy. But, definitely apply if you like the school.

good luck

spartan, S is looking at case. 34 ACT, 2010 SAT, NMSF, 3.5w/3.2uw (some learning issues). thoughts?

Thanks CaseS.

Any suggestions of schools (suburban) in the Baltimore area or at least easily accessibility to the airport. Great flights from BLT to Long Island!! (Haven't heard great things aobut Townson so that is out. S will apply to Maryland but that will be a reach. Very competitive and lots of Long Island kids applying.

(By the way, checked out delta.com and looked for flights. Non-stops to EDI available from JKF. Price is odd. It comes up as $900+ for one way and less for total round trip. Have to look into it better or call them. )
Thanks.

pmrlcomm,

very nice ACT score, I don't really see a reason to submit SAT (unless he did SATII, in which case i believe they'll see it anyways). I would guess that ACT score would be enough to offset a rather low GPA for admission. Also, i'm not really sure how merit aid works, but I had the impression that it was based more off of test scores than GPA. If this is the case, your son is in very good shape for a scholarship.

crazed,

As far as I know, there aren't very many top suburban baltimore schools that are known for engineering/comp sci. Of course, there is JHU, which is obviously more urban, but I can't really say how uncomfortable that might make your son. Towson isn't a good place for engineering, and I don't think Goucher college is either. Have you tried looking at DC schools (georgetown/gwu?)

(Also crazed: That's very strange. I've only looked for flights thru those obscure international airlines..Try looking at those. I've seen one-ways as low as $500)

Wanna chance me spartan :D it is my thread :D

[ *] Other Factors/questions: Since my SAT scores are pretty mediocre I'm thinking of only sending my ACT score. What do you guys think?

Thanks in Advance

Hmm, feel free to re-take the SAT, but I would suggest just submitting your ACT, which looks far more impressive at the moment.

EC/Involvement also looks good. Overall, I would say your chances are pretty good. Being korean from NY may hurt a bit, but I really don't think Case takes much part in the whole "We're going to reject you because you're overrepresented" thing.

Also, you might simply not send your SAT II score, since they will probably be expecting something higher, especially as a prospective engineer (although do note that you're not applying to Case engineering, simply Case western as a whole, due to their "one door policy")

my stats are very similar to yours fleaman and how do you plan on retaking the sat in october when it was the exam was 2 weeks ago?

oh i just copied pasted a chance thread from like 2 months ago

oh and ACT i got 34 Math 34 writing 28 science and 24 english

CaseS-
Just played around with dates.
Roundtrip- Feb -May= $532 plus $113 taxes and fees for a total of $646 round trip!!!!
Trip insurance is another $13.50.
Not bad!

yeah, those were more along the prices that I found. Just make sure you're looking at flights for early january, since the semester starts around the 11th or 12th!

yeah, you SAt scores are kind of low. If you want scholarships, I would suggest that you look into going to the interview with your adcom in november to december.
this is for OP.

kind of disppointed at Case right now. first year. have a stupid Calculus teacher who just graduated witha phd from mizzou. she's a "visiting proffesor" horrible. puts stuff on the test that she never taught.
and SAGES is crap. you never learn anything but just talking about crap. just the essays you need to worry about. got a C on my first essay (though I never worked on it). but the prof. seems not really suited towards grading essays. e.g. doesn't know much about an argumentative essay. they say that the classes with the TA's as writing assisstant are easier.

and administration doesn't give a D******** about the music department. It's so underfunded. our music stands )(some of them) are still from the WRU ear. e.g. western reserve university.

and yes, Case institute of technology is clearly the superior school (Than Wru).

WRU (10 char)

and so you might wonder why I am posting this stuff. b/c the only way admin. cares about students is when the prospective applicants DROP!!!!! otherwise, they can do whatever they want. just look at how they moved undergrad admissions from tomlinson hall to wolstein. read the observe newspaper. tofind out

xtra- so how are the other aspects of life at case? social life, dorms, food...?

No offence xtra, but i'll bet you're only complaining about SAGES because you got a bad grade on your paper- One of the many problems with case students. If we're not getting good grades, it must be an aweful class.

I'll admit that some of the SAGES classes are complete BS. In fact, I thought my first SAGES class freshman year was the most pointless hour of my life (even though i did very well in the class). However, my favorite class at Case thus far was also a SAGES course. My professor was inspiring and approachable, and it was the only writing class i've ever enjoyed. People need to quit being so quick to judge the SAGES program based on what others around them are saying. I was a horrible writer coming into college, but now i'm fairly comfortable saying that I have decent writing skills, and i definitely attribute that to SAGES.

Not every class you take in college will be spectacular.

-I know nothing about the music equipment so i can't comment.

Okay so i just looked over my last post, and realized that i don't necessarily mean that you only dislike SAGES because of your bad grade. What i mean to say, is that particularly at a school like Case, many students are simply not college level writers as freshman. So, its not surprising that tons of students get a C on their first paper (I believe my first grade was a C-). Noting the type of student Case typically attracts, a 'C' is bound to start riots all over campus. I just think that the difficult transition from high school writing to college writing, or possibly one bad class, is not a reason to discount the sages program as a whole.
