foundation fellowship/charter/honors invitation

first question: i got honors invitation. does this make me more qualified for foundation fellowship?

second question: i heard that if you're sent a charter scholarship, that means you got cut for the foundation fellowship interview. is this correct? all my friends received a charter scholarship and I didn't, but they're all people who I thought were smarter than me and were more likely for foundation fellowship... by the way, a foundation fellow at uga told me this but he's not sure.

Unfortunately, I cannot entirely answer your questions. I do know–with a good degree of certainty–that the University invites a few dozen finalists to come to campus to give interviews. The top 15 or so (or it may be fewer because of budget cuts) are offered the prestigious Foundation Fellowship, while the “runners-up” are offered the Charter Scholarship. This was how UGA conducted this process in years past; I cannot comment whether it’s been amended. Either one is a GREAT deal. Good luck!

All FF finalists invited for the interview weekend are guaranteed at least a Ramsey scholarship if not selected for FF. If you have received a Charter Scholarship, congratulations! You are in the top 220-250 of all applicants this year, but you probably are not a FF finalist. I expect all FF finalists are in Honors, so probably no advantage there.

thanks katdawg and merkur.
yeah, i heard the same thing you said, merkur. just wanted to make sure. i didn’t get charter scholarship so… hopefulyyy im invited to FF interview weekend :D:D:D

From the letter offering the Charter Scholarship I received:

“If you have applied for the Bernard Ramsey Honors Scholarship and the Foundation Fellowship those decision letters will be mailed in late January. Should you be awarded a Ramsey or a Fellowship that award will replace this Charter Scholarship.”

This would lead one to believe that some who were already offered the Charter Scholarship will be invited for the FF interview.

I got the Georgia One UGA Scholarhip…an oos tuition waiver plus 1,500 a year.

My letter said the same thing as BigDawg14

i see. well good job for getting the scholarship! its better than nothing
i haven’t received anything yet. hopefully i wont end up with no scholarship at all. :</p>

Congratulations to all of you in the running for these scholarships.

Would you mind providing some basic background/stats (SAT, ACT, GPA, etc.) to provide some insight as to what is needed to be in the running for the scholarships mentioned?

Again, congratulations and good luck in the selection process.

It’s not very specific, however.

Also, here are some stats on FF and BR:

I highly doubt that the Charter Scholarship excludes one from FF interviews.

It’s just an automatic scholarship sent to the top 200-250, probably including the FF interviewees.

I’d bet that the idea that it excludes one from FF is a misconception that stems off the fact that so many people get the Charter and so few get the interviews.

Charter Scholar doesn’t exclude one from FF.

Misconception arises because FF cannot receive the Charter Scholarship (no double dipping with both Charter and FF). However, that doesn’t mean Charter Scholars don’t have a shot at receiving FF. Receiving Charter doesn’t put one ahead in the FF competition, but as far as I’m aware, nearly all FF qualified for Charter before being selected as FF or Ramsey scholars. Somewhat confusing, but that’s my understanding. Would anyone care to confirm?

Hmm, do we know how many people got automatic admission to honors? I mean, I know it’s the top 2% or whatever, but how many students is that roughly? I ask because it seems like, if only a handful of people were admitted to honors automatically, they would be the same people receiving the FF interviews/Charter scholarships. Only I got auto honors admit, but no Charter, and I’m pretty sure there’s no way I came even close to qualifying for FF, so it seems weird to me that I got into honors already. (Did that make any sense?)

I believe that there were approximately 11,000 EA applicants, so roughly 220 students were offered an Honors invite, assuming the 2% is an exact number. It does seem odd that you didn’t get the Charter…it seems that one would entail the other. The only explanation I see is that the 200-250 Charter scholarships awarded each year are awarded through April; I don’t know an exact number, but only a select number have been mailed out in the first wave. I’d say you have an extremely high chance of being offered one in the next wave of offers.

True. I know a significant number of people (probably 15 or 20) who were auto-admitted to Honors but received Charter scholarships as late as March last year. That tells me Admissions is waiting until they’ve had an opportunity to assess the Regular Decision applicant pool before wrapping up Charter scholarships. As an auto-admit for Honors, you’ve definitely got a strong chance for Charter, Lepidus.

Thanks guys! That’s really encouraging. I’m most likely gonna end up at Tech or UGA, so any aid possible would help. :)

My son is OSS and was offered Early Honors around Christmas I think. Tomorrow he is attending the 5 hour session at UGA for Early Honors students. We have not yet heard anything on Charter or Regents scholarships (the out of state scholarship). Since they say the Fellowship notifications are made “late January” we hope to hear something this week on Charter/Regents.

We were a LITTLE dissapointed not to have heard yet since others seem to have already been offered Charter. We can’t/won’t attend UGA if we don’t get the Regent’s waiver. Clearly, the incoming kids are more talented each year. My son’s SATs were 700 R, 750 M, 740 WR. 3.99 UNW gap (highest gpa in class). ECs included Senior Class President and Captain of varisty basketball team.

Good luck all.

I’m expecting foundation fellows will be announced tomorrow or in the next following days…ahh!

Well, that would be consistent with what they have said (late January). I had not thought of it before, but since the Foundation/Ramsey scholars (about 50, of the 2 categories) in essence give up their Charter or other Merit scholarship, that frees up about 50 more of the Charter scholarships. Hopefully my son will be in the round this week that gets a Charter scholarship.

It would be nice if they could provide a definitive cut-off for when the out of state applicants would be notified about the Regent scholarships.
