Hey, I'll be an incoming freshman this year to NYU - I heard Founders hall had really large rooms, I was wondering if any current students could compare the size of a typical room in founders to Rubins, Haydens, etc.

Additionally, I heard the walk from campus is quite long, I was wondering if this posed a problem to anyone currently living in founders/3rd north?

Thanks!

The rooms at Founders are relatively large and clean. Floors are tiled which makes it easier to clean. Hayden is also nice, not as big usually but has charming windows and some consider it to be the best freshman dorm because it’s on campus and pretty social. The walk is 7 to 15 minutes depending on what building you’re going to. It’s not bad at all. You could get there in 5 if you hustle.

Founders definitely has the biggest rooms- although the rooms at Rubin (not the low cost- the corner suite regular cost ones) are pretty huge too. & Hayden’s rooms are usually a pretty decent size.
Third Norths are probably the smallest, but you get the added bonus of a kitchen and a common room.
But yeah the walk from Founders to Wash Square is about 15 minutes- not bad at all. And you’re right by Union Square so you’re in a really cool neighboorhood.

I’d try to stay on campus while you can though. You’ll probably never be that close to WSP again.

I’m going to be in Founders; I’m super excited! Another student reports it has heat and A/C. Because the floors are tile, it may be wise to invest in a Swiffer and a rug for when the floors get cold in the winter. As of 2012, wifi is available in the entire dorm, not just the lounges like NYU’s site says. Look at the pics on the Internet; it’s huge!

Which dining halls do kids who are in Founders usually go to and what are some good non dining hall options nearby? What sorts of activities are there during welcome week?

Founders kids usually go to Third North and Palladium. Third North is only half a block away and Palladium is exactly where Founders is, just one block north.

As for non dining hall options, there’s a bunch of stuff near Union Square (Panera, Au Bon Pain, Chipotle, Starbucks, Cosi, Pret A Manger…) And of course there are New York-y places too. Founders is super close to Max Brenner- a favorite of NYU students.

as for welcome week, there are TONS of activities. When looking at the schedule, your student will probably want to do all of them and realistically end up doing very few of them. The night activies are usually very well attended though, there’s a huge Ball (this years theme is “Glow Ball” i believe), there’s a rocky horror picture showing, there’s a comedy show… a bunch of fun things!
