Have you ever thought about a word, in this case founding, so much that it ceases to look like a real word? Well, I just did, hence the thread's title.

Anyway, I was thinking about starting up a Chess Club this year, since my school has none, and I really like to play, and there's already a bunch of people that play in the library after school, but I've no idea how to go about it. I thought I could just wait 'till the start of school and talk to the principal, and see what I have to do, but I'm not a patient person.

I know I need a sponsor, and I have a teacher in mind, but aside from that, what else is needed/required? If anybody has any experience with this, please help, I'm lost!

Just ask your administration. Every school is way different, there's no way anyone on here could really tell you anything besides what they went through at their own schools.

If you're impatient, schools are open during the summer. Call.

Thanks, maybe I will.

I would wait until after you ask the teacher to sponsor, and then figure out how to set up the details after you speak to them; they'll have more weight with the admins than a student and will probably have a better idea of the school's system concerning organizations.

(And San Antonio...I'm so sorry!)

My sentiments exactly.

You can start telling your friends and others now about your interest in starting a chess club, and line up 10 or so potential members so that you can present your principal and potential faculty advisor with that list when school starts. This way, they know that you are serious about starting the club.

You can also search the net for high school chess club websites to get some ideas about what activities other clubs get involved with.

Are you interested in competitive chess where your school plays against other schools in your area? If so, you may want to check out the U.S. Chess Federation Scholastic Chess program info at http://www.uschess.org/ScholasticFAQ.php ...

why didn't you say something about chess in the title. The "founded" thing has nothing to do with what you're saying.

It was just... I have a strange process of thinking. Anyway, yes, I'd like for it to be a competitive thing, but those U.S. Chess Federation fees are a little intimidating.

Thanks a bunch gspsiliconvalley, those sites are very helpful.

There are probably different levels of hs competition. You may want to start off slow and easy, and check with other schools in your area to see if they have a chess club and are interested in some friendly competition.

There are other schools in the San Antonio area with a chess club. I just don't have the time to do the research for you.

Why not cruise by the SA Chess Club meeting this evening or next Thursday, just to see what's happening, if there are any hs students present, etc.

!!! GOOD LUCK !!!
