Four paragraphs feels so wrong...

Hello everyone!

After writing my Common App essay, revising it a few times, and making some much needed edits, I finally felt good about my final product.

I sent it off to one of my English teachers for suggestions/comments so that I could try to improve it. She suggested to cut my openining paragraph completely and just start with the next one. This would bring my essay from five paragraphs, down to four. I'm so conditioned to use five paragraphs...it just feels wrong/awkward to do four.

I guess my main question is: Should I worry about this, or can it be pulled off succesfully?

That all depends on what your introduction entailed to begin with. Have a few more people edit it to be sure! And don’t be afraid to step outside of the fifth grade essay mold! 4 or 5 paragraphs won’t make or break your essay or application! Best of luck

Thanks for the quick reply! I see what you’re saying, and I’ll think on it. I’ll be sure to have some other people edit it, as well. Thanks for the help!

A 5 paragraph essay, at least in the form you are referring to, is a bad sign for admissions to top colleges. Not to sound pretentious, but 5 paragraph essays are for freshman in HS, not freshman in college. At least that’s how I’d see it, and I’m not nearly as snobby as some of these admissions officers.

Thanks for the input! I see your concerns a bit, but my essay isn’t really a intro-point-point-point-conclusion, 5 paragrahh, standard essay (Although it may just seem that way to me ;P).

It’s currently structured as intro-anecdote-present day-anecdote-conclusion, although that probably doesn’t give you much insight as to what the paper actually sounds like.
