My daughter is a Junior and plans on applying to several T20s next year. She is currently in Spanish 4. Understanding that these schools like to see four years of a foreign language, she plans on taking Spanish her Senior year. Her options are either AP Spanish or Representations and Reality in Hispanic Cinema. Her school allows students to only take three APs a year and she wanted to take AP English, Civics and Bio. Should she consider taking regular Civics so she can take AP Spanish, or is she good taking the Hispanic Cinema class, which is only one semester?
So some else will verify if I’m correct…but the colleges want Spanish 4 if they are saying four years of FL. Your daughter is taking that now. She should be fine.
But you could call a few admissions offices and ask…
If she would rather take AP gov instead of AP Spanish that’s fine.
For a junior who completed Spanish 4, she is covered at every single university. Spanish cinema is a fine option if she is interested in the topic, but not necessary.
She does not need to take either to get into top colleges in the country. Really, 3 years is fine and she has 4. She could take Spanish 101 at a local community college this summer if she really wanted it. Or volunteer or work somewhere where she can use her Spanish skills.
Level 4 Spanish is fine, and she could add Hispanic cinema since it sounds like a fun class that’d differentiate her schedule a bit.
Taking the 3 AP’s you listed + Hispanic cinema + Math would make a full schedule academically.
The high school level 4 course would likely put her beyond the beginner Spanish course at a college. If she wants to take additional Spanish at a college, she should follow the college’s placement procedure to choose the correct level college course.
I think the Hispanic Cinema course sounds great. My kids didn’t take Spanish as HS seniors and took culinary arts. I think it’s nice when a student can do something different.
The Hispanic Cinema course will keep her experiencing Spanish. Some colleges do have a FL requirement for certain majors. Nice to continue so maybe she can take a placement test out of some of that…or a CLEP test if her school will accept it.
