FPF Math 1B

Currently I have signed up for Math 1A in FPF. I just received my AP exam scores and scored a 5 in Calculus AB. According to FPF's website, this allows me to pass into Math 1B.

Do you guys recommend skipping 1A for 1B?

I've heard that 1B is much easier in FPF, and that it would be wise to take it instead of waiting to take it in the spring. I've also heard that it is a very difficult class, and it would be better to "warm up" with 1A. My high school calculus class was not very rigorous, but I feel pretty comfortable with all the topics of AB.

So, people with experience, what do you think? Any input would be appreciated.

If you’re going to take math 1b at one point or another, take it in FPF. Smaller classes, and the professor teaches both the lecture and discussion and last year, both professors were better than the ones on campus (from what I’ve heard from friends). My friend had only taken Calc AB with a 5 and did fine in 1b. You might need to study a little harder, but if you ever need help, office hours are very helpful.

Thanks. Any more opinions?

Is Fred Bourgoin teaching Math 1B at FPF?

Not sure – I don’t know where to find the list of professors for the fall since the filing period for FPF classes has ended. The only reason I have the option of switching is because of AP scores.

I believe Fred is ONLY teaching Math 1B so you’re in luck.

Is he a great professor? I am leaning toward skipping 1A, I don’t really see the point in taking it.

Bourgoin is a good professor but I’ve heard that his tests can be too long for the one hour period. Not sure if he curves though…

I was in his Math 1A class and his tests we’re definitely not too long. I finished his final almost an hour before the max time allotted (3 hours) and his midterms were very manageable.

Haas undergrad advisors haven’t responded to me yet - I’ll be calling them this week. However, does anyone know if pre-business majors can skip Math 1A using AP Calc AB credit ? Or is that only allowed for people who use AP Calc BC credit?

A Five (5) on the BC Test gets you out of 1 semester of calculus I believe. You can easily check this by googling something like Haas pre-requisites.

Yeah, I did. So does that mean you can’t AP out of Math1A with AB credit?

http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/pdf/admissionchanges.pdf

Under “students with credits”

Fred is an awesome teacher. No questions asked if you aren’t pre-med but need to take the 1A-1B series, take it at FPF with him. I actually wasn’t that good at Math coming into Berkeley… with respect to my fellow engineering students, but I spent a lot of after-hours with Fred and he filled the gaps in my math arsenal. I got a 4 on Calc AB and got an A+ in his class.

But it looks like if I want to keep my options open for Haas, I have to take 1A… dumb to me.

Yeah that’s how it look like. I’m in the same boat  I’m still going to call to make sure…

Regarding those who had bourgoing,

I just had my first exam today and I don’t think I did too well, mainly because I blanked out (the problems were just like the homework which I have no problem on). So I’m kind of worried about my grade.
**
I feel, without partial credit I got a 55% and with I got 65% on it…(uncurved). Does he curve his exams?**
**
If not, then are there other opportunities to “make up” for this bad exam (there are only 2)?
*I’m hoping for a few opportunities for extra credit and such.**

I’m just worried now for my grade since I may have to apply to haas

Thanks!

He gives extra credit on exams, but rarely curves because of that. Work with him though; he’s a nice guy and spend office hours with him because that’s where he will really get to know/like you.

Yeah, what Eye said. I took 1A with him last fall and his exams are very manageable. Compared to the 1B class I took on campus, i would’ve definitely done better (with less study time) with Prof. Bourgoin. Keep at it and you’ll be fine.
