First of all, I would like to introduce myself as the newbie of College Confidential. My daddy referred me to this website and thought it would be beneficial in my abilities to score high on the ACT. I will be entering my senior year next school year, and I would really love to score high on the ACT so that I can attended The University of Tennessee. I plan to major in Biochemistry in order to become a forensic scientists.
I have taken the ACT twice so far. The first time I took it was in my sophomore year of high school. I scored with a 20. The second time I took the ACT was my junior year, and I scored with a 21. I have practiced on the ACT website, and I also have religiously read the Princeton Review. I want to know how I can score from a 21 to maybe a 30-36.
In order to be able to attend UT, I have to at least make either a 27 or 28. All advice and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome to CC, and going from a 20 to a 30 quite possible. First, you must realize that it isn’t all about numbers. You can have a 24-25 and still matriculate into UTenn, if you work hard on extra curriculars and the essay. On the other hand, you can have a 30 and be rejected, if you didn’t work hard on extra curriculars and the essay. To score a 30-36 you must think logically when taking the test, particuarly on the reading and science sections. Truthfully, the ACT is all basic material, but often test takers are intimidated by it and make it seem a lot harder than it actually is. You’d be surprised how high you could score, when you have yet to learn any of the material. You can take prep courses through KAPLAN or you can order the ACT flashcards, which are really helpful. It’d help to take advanced courses in high school as they can potentially help you know the knowledge that will be on the ACT, and lower anxiety come test day.

Thanks!
I just registered for Kaplan, and it really does help! I’m still trying to get the hang of it, but at least it lets me know where I stand.

UT-Knoxville does “superscore” the ACT, which may help you.

So, right now I’m taking a practice ACT test in the back of the Princeton Review. Luckily, there are answers in the back so that I can easily check the test. I will probably have my father check them for me. My only question is, how do the scores on the Princeton Review rank on the ACT. How do they compare?

I heard they are a pretty good indicator. But apparently the 1296 PR book is a bit harder than the actual exam.

Yeah, I looked at the questions. They are a bit harder.

Me too! I studied all the ACT books religiously and all I got was a 22! :(
