frat after transfer?

this fall, as a freshman i pledged a frat. that said, i am applying to transfer, and may be at a new school in fall of 09 (as a sophomore). what happens if i get into another school? do i just join that school's chapter? do i rush again? how does that work?

i had the same question earlier on this forum. basically my answer was that if i was initiated in one school's frat, i could switch into anothers chapter, but i wouldnt be able to change frats.

what happens if, say, my new school has no chapter of my frat? problem is, i am planning on applying to schools where greeklife is kind of a big deal, so greeklife would be something id like to be involved with

I'm in a fraternity also and if you transfer schools and were initiatied beforehand in one chapter. You would be able to become a brother at the new chapter, because we have a brother who lives in a boards in another frat house since he didn't know there was our chapter on campus. He comes to the house frequently, and he can become a brother if he wants to. Maybe you should give your national hq a call and ask.

Just a heads up rollz4, if the school you are transferring to is a big Greek school where it is really competitive to get into certain fraternities, it may not be so simple. The chapter does not have to let you affiliate, and if they don't, you can get alumni status.

Not saying that this will happen, but that it can.

If the new school does not have a chapter of your fraternity, you can get alumni status. You cannot join another IFC fraternity once you have been initiated into one.

thats a dumb rule

all the schools im transferring to have the same chapter of my frat. so i just join them (if i want to) right?

Check with your fraternity's headquaters what the procedure is. You may have to "re-pledge" again so you can learn about the chapter's history and get to know the brothers better.

I don't want to discourage you at all, and everything may totally work out fine, but just so you are aware of the situation: if the fraternity that you are a member of at your current school is a really competitive chapter at the school you transfer to, it may be harder to affiliate.

I know that at my son's chapter, they sometimes have guys transfer into the school and try to affiliate. If they are good guys and mesh with the chapter, then they have to go through a "pledgeship" of sorts to get to know members first, then they let them officially affiliate. If they are just some random guy who the members know won't fit in, they don't let them affiliate.

On the other hand, the fraternity that you are a member of at your current chapter may be awful at the school you transfer to, so you may want to just get alumni status.

It goes both ways.
