Frat Question

Which is the best frat at Columbia for a regular person who wants to work hard, but also wants to let loose a little on weekends?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/columbia-university/727432-st-anthonys-hall.html

not that saint a’s is the best frat, not much of a frat even really, but that’s a thread in which frats at columbia are discussed.

Tanks…

That’s a pretty dumb question considering all frats are different and no two Columbians are alike.

I suggest you thoroughly research greek life at Columbia.

sig ep is the coolest one in my opinion–it’s not really linked to any sports and the guys have a reputation of being pretty chill

yeah. do your research. do you want a frat frat? you want a group of guys just to network with? it all depends…

this is just from what I know of… correct me if I’m wrong. Also, I’ve only been at CU for a year so this is just what I’ve experienced/heard

aepi: very jewy frat. no sport affiliation. decent parties at times, house is so-so. basement is blacklit and on occasion, a good dance party goes down. I’ve seen a DJ on occasion at their parties

sigep: crew? mostly. nice guys for the most part. they throw a good party or two every year. relatively fratty.

pike: known (negatively) for a campus incident where a “date-rape manual” was circulated among brothers. free beer and pong frequently if that’s your thing though. rush process is extreme… but apparently brothers are pretty close. a few “campus characters” are brothers

delta sig:no sport affiliation. one of the nicer of the houses. huge frat membership-wise. fratty, but they throw pretty good parties. they have a DJ either in the frat or really close to it 'cause he’s sometimes at the parties. he sucks though.

ZBT: baseball. pretty much only baseball players. they throw a party or two for the athlete crowd. very fratty. house is off of frat row on… 115?th W of bway

KDR: basketball, but because of the size of the team, many non-basketball players. once known for crazy parties. there isnt even a pledge process. as a result, not really fratty. rumored to give out big scholarships to brothers

sigma nu: swimmers. they threw one amazing party this year. apparently rush is pretty brutal. pretty decent house… and the brothers are decent guys for the most part.

sigma chi: football… kind of like ZBT but for football players. Parties are more beer and pong. rush process exists but isn’t too extreme. Unlike ZBT, brothers aren’t as “exclusive” i.e. if they like you, they will encourage you to pledge even if you’re not on the team

Beta: once the frattiest of all frats, now a dry house. extremely nice house-- and they own it too… so if you get to live there, its cheaper than campus housing–i think. don’t know much about them except that they don’t really do any social events

Owl House (psi u?): used to be an engineering frat… now pretty broad. interesting rep though-- known for weed and (don’t ask me why, I’ve just heard it multiple times) dungeons and dragons.

ADP: not a frat. a co-ed literary society. nice house. hipsters flock here for crazy hipster parties with crazy hipster drugs.

Zeta Psi: Lost their house/never had one?.. now in an EC townhouse. Been there for pong a few times… not ******-y at all

Fiji: Lost their house… in an EC townhouse. fighting to get their house back (right now, it’s a Butler renovation construction office). Used to throw good parties.

Asian/African American frats: I know they exist… and that some of my friends went to the Asian ones in EC for free liquor. That’s all.

Question to all the other CU students/alums on here – would you be able to put together a list like this? When I was at Columbia, I doubt I knew more than 1-2 of these names.

if you’re involved in greek life it’s pretty to make a list like that.

to answer the original question: beta. some brothers are just ridiculous people. since we don’t hold open events, we’re not as high profile, but we’re still quite active socially. Unless I’m mistaken, we also crip walk the most out of any fraternity.

yeah some of those names sound familiar, I’ve heard that pike is the sex-offender frat, and beta is turning into a wall street frat because one of my good friends is now prez.

Other than those, the rest are a blur, I’ve stumbled into shtty parties, played pong a couple of times, and stared in disbelief as everyone gathered around a guitar hero match for hours. I can’t remember which belonged to which frat but, for some reason I doubt it makes a difference. A lot of people join frats because:

a) sports affiliation
b) they’ve unfortunately heard and believe: “it’s the thing to do in college”
c) just like living with dudes and being brotherly
d) can’t make friends normally

this sounds rather, um, gay

As per the words of my cousin Phil from Notre-Dame at Christmas. “It’s not gay if you do it with another straight guy”.

…Yeah.

Another “straight” guy

yeah, that would be the joke, C02. thanks for helping us out on that one. :P

“pike: known (negatively) for a campus incident where a “date-rape manual” was circulated among brothers. free beer and pong frequently if that’s your thing though. rush process is extreme… but apparently brothers are pretty close. a few “campus characters” are brothers”

No such manual was ever circulated. Pike has had the reputation of being a date rape frat long before I ever even went to Columbia. Not sure what the origin is, but for the past 5 years at least it simply isn’t true. Anyone who says otherwise has no idea what they’re talking about.

unless i’m very mistaken, pike was busted for distributing a date-rape manual among its brothers during my freshman year, 2002-2003, and it made news on the Spec.

maybe that’s outside your 5-year window, I dunno.

Sorry to revive the topic, but I was wondering what other people think about this in the aftermath of operation ivy league. What do you guys think is the best frat in columbia (and who has graduates that do best)?
