Fraternities - How do they work and how to sign up?

Hey everyone,

I'm going to be attending UF in the Fall and I am really interested in joining a Frat but I'm clueless about how to do so and the costs associated with doing so. How does the whole process (signing up for rush week, rush week, costs associated) work for incoming Freshman?

I don’t think you have to worry about anything until September…chek the calendar on the first link below. Fraternity rushing is really fun and low key…just go to parties and dinners out with the guys and meet them. I know costs are more than other housing options, but probably worth it if you can swing the time requirements if you are a pledge–think duties at the house and driving the drunk upperclassmen home from the bars. Also, check the first link for how to sign up, etc. Note: if you have a difficult major (pre-med, engineering, etc.)–it can be challenging to be a member of a fraternity with all the time commitments that are asked of you, especially during pledging semester.

Thanks for some info, I was just wondering because I know that for the Panhellenic Council for Sororities that they have to sign up and pay like $150 for their rush week, so do you think there is no sign up and you just go or what?

jankrav is dead on. If your major is difficult? Be very careful. The demands on your time are tough.

While I suppose there is at least a slight difference in cost from one fraternity to the next, would someone actually post a $ cost for a member this year??

Thanks David

I only pay 140 a semester for my fraternity, but we are not IFC and we generally don’t do/have a lot of things that require us to have a large money supply. I’ve heard numbers for IFC frats around 1000-2000 due there being a house, meal plans, etc.

I don’t think guys have to pay to go through rush week…My S went through in 2010 and I don’t think he paid anything. He had a blast, got bids from 3 decent houses, but decided not to pledge due to a difficult major (mech/aero engineering). I know he went to an informational meeting at the Reitz union around the first week in Sept., and just signed up to rush and they gave him a calendar of what events/parties were at the different houses. He and his roommate went thru rush together and went together to the houses. Why not email this address and they might be able to answer your ?s : info@ufifc.org

Heck, as part of rush, I’d think for the sake of transparency the fraternities would post their costs-- housing, meal plans, dues, extras etc. Dollars might just become an issue in depledging leading to unhappiness. I guess it’s not an issue. I was a member years ago.

Just a thought. .02 David
