Fraternities @ UGA

Hi,

Im a newly admitted student, Class of 2013!

I was just wondering if anyone can give me a rundown on the fraternity scene at UGA. I know that there are usually stereotypes for each frat (sometimes true, sometimes not). So if someone is willing to give me the stereotypes and/or their own opinion that'd be great!

bump…

Greek life is huge at UGA. Especially in your freshman year, Greek t-shirts and/or the fraternity uniform of polo shirt, khaki shorts, and sperrys can seem ubiquitous.

There aren’t really that many bad fraternities at UGA. A couple are ridiculously exclusive and don’t really participate in rush because they’ve got legacies and friends from elite private schools lined up to pledge there. These are the old money fraternities (SAE, KA, Chi Phi). To be honest, you won’t get in to those because if you were, you’d already know.

All of the other fraternities fare just fine though at UGA, because it’s such a strong Greek school. If you’re interested, you should DEFINITELY participate in some summer recruitment events. You should be getting stuff in the mail from fraternities inviting you to these summer recruitment events soon. They’re supposed to be alcohol-free, but FYI they rarely are.

If you don’t get anything in the mail (you’ll get less if you’re out of state or from a small high school), go to uga.edu/ifc and find the contact info for the rush chairs at all the fraternities.

Don’t accept the first bid you get, make sure you leave all options open.

And one last word of advice: don’t wear Hollister, AE, etc. or hair gel to recruitment events. It’s viewed as very “middle school” by Greeks. It seems superficial, and to some extent it is, but that’s just the way it is and it hurts your chances because the nature of rush is that fraternities are having to make a lot of judgements based on first impressions.
