I have not yet been accepted to Penn State but it is one of my top choices. I have a couple of questions on frats, because as of now, I am planning on rushing.
Is it worth joining a frat at Penn State? What are regarded as the “best” frats at Penn State? How much does it cost per semester to be in a frat?
Thanks, I am more just curious.
I’ll try to answer your questions. My son is a freshman at Penn State who just joined a social fraternity. No one can tell you if it’s “worth” joining a fraternity. The only reason he joined is because he became friends with some of the brothers and he really liked hanging out with them. He was also assured that the fraternity he rushed had absolutely no hazing. He only rushed one fraternity and received a bid. But, if he didn’t, he wouldn’t have been upset. No one can tell you which fraternities (social) are the best ones. You can look online for rankings, but I’m not sure how reliable those rankings are. It should be whichever one is a good fit for you.
As far as price goes, each fraternity has their own costs associated with them and it’s really, hard trying to find out what those costs are. Believe me, my son and I both tried. It is very pricy.
One piece of advice, pledging a fraternity is very time consuming. I would try to take a lighter load if you can if you decide to rush. My son had to actually drop a class. But, he was ahead of schedule between his transfer credits and he also did summer session.
@japsmom if you don’t mind me asking, what frat did he join?
I’d rather not say on this forum. But, if you get into PSU and you decide to rush, you can pm me.
