Hey everyone, I'm going to be coming in as a transfer student this fall (second year) and was interested in fraternity life. A couple questions: first of all, how is the pi kappa phi chapter? I was the co-founder of a new associate chapter of pi kappa phi at my old school and was thinking about continuing with that. Also, any comments on some of the other chapters - which ones have great social events? strong business connections? etc... Thanks, any info would be appreciated.

I know a few pi kapp dudes, they are pretty cool guys.

"which ones have great social events?"

If by great social events, you mean mixers with the hottest sorority girls, then the answer is the southern fraternities, such as zeta psi, anthony's hall, KA, DKE, Kappa Sig, etc.

"strong business connections?"

The southern, wealthy houses. I know that some anthony's hall dudes have dads who are big shots, same thing with some chi phi guys. DKE will definitely have elite business connection, as well. I would assume almost all the southern fraternities would give you fairly good business connections.

P.S. I heard the SAM chapter at UVa is a bunch of business-oriented kids as well.

Bottom line, I think you should go through the rush process and check out your best fit. Houses can be vastly different across different schools. The Chi Phi house in Princeton is more like the Sigma Phi house at UVa, which is extremely different from the Chi Phi chapter at UVa.

First I would ask you what the Greek scene was like at your previous university. I ask this because Greek Life is different at every University. We have 32 fraternities at the University so just imagine how different each house. In addition, do not get the impression that the 'southern houses' are the only successful houses. While they may have a history of excellence, many other houses share that same tradition and have numerous leaders on grounds.

Most importantly, i don't think anyone should join a fraternity simply for its 'business connections'. That is not what greek life is about. However, take the opportunity to rush and if you find a house that fits what you are looking for in college, and in life, join it.

Good post, anyotherday.

I'll bet you will find like-minded/business oriented guys in many (or most?) of the frats. And the same goes for social opportunities--they are everywhere.

One thing that comes to mind.... If you founded Pi Kap at your previous school, I am assuming you actually pledged it also. Doesn't that bind you to the same frat in the case of a transfer?

Maybe you are just asking about other frats for general info?? I couldn't tell.
Good luck at UVa!
