Fraternity and school

With interest in the possibility of joining a fraternity ( when I attend college), I was wondering how the whole process works. Does it take up a large piece of your freshmen year?

Also with interest in the greek life ( but not in the position where I'm absolutely sure I'll join a fraternity)... what are top greek schools you know of?
-Population of 30,000 +
-Ranked in top 100 according to USNEWS.com
( your list will help me find more insight in fraternities/ greek life)

Top 15 schools with best Greek I’d say Cornell or Dartmouth, what are your stats?

Resident of Michigan
GPA: 3.75
Currently a junior
ACT: Take in spring
Taking and have history of taking honors, and Ap classes.

Top greek schools with 30,000+ students does not equal Dartmouth or Cornell, although Cornell comes closer. Sounds like you are thinking of Michigan or Penn State or Wisconsin or Florida. Or at least that type of school.

You might not need to worry about fraternities yet. They have a process for recruitment which consists mainly of social functions that are open to everyone where you would get a chance to talk to people in the fraternities before you decide to rush. Even if you don’t decide to rush, you get free meals, parties and alcohol out of the deal.

Also, the greek system is not as homogenous as you might think. There are houses for people brought together by professional interests, religious affiliations, athletics, lack of intelligence or many other key factors.

Illinois has the largest Greek System in the world and is a top ten Public University and often referred to as a public ivy. Though it is getting more and more difficult to get into especially OOS

Thanks for all the replies, more is welcome.

Really Illinios largest greek system in the world? I never really looked at schools in Illinios due to location ( not really an ideal place to live… well there is Chicago) though I guess college attending is different. I guess a month or so from now I wouldn’t be surprise if Illinios was added to a possible list… though I wouldn’t want to attend a school just because it’s greek system, for I’m not even that forsure on whether I’ll join a fraternity in college ( it varies, by finding out more information and my college life not in a fraternity).
Though having a good greek system, and top ten schools for public universities is a plus.

Michigan was also mention, which I was sorta surprise to hear… maybe a few years ago it wouldn’t have been to surprising.

Could anyone compare MSU and UofM- Ann Arbor fraternities… along with a more indepeth information about what belevitt said ( process of recruitment).

Oh yeah, I did look at Illinios acceptance rate today… according to USNEWS.com it was like 71%.

Don’t let the acceptance rate deceive you, over 70% of its students are top 10% of their class, the avarege ACT score is about 29-30. Most students who apply are qualified and those who aren’t generally are not qualified. Some programs are harder to get into than others, for example Engineering and Business are extremely selective (i have a friend who was deferred from Engineering with a 35 ACT in state) and other programs such as Liberal Arts and Sciences are pretty competitive too.

Out of state is significantly harder, also.

Wow, though 71% of those who apply are accepted.
Would you say majority come from the Chicago area, due to that’s where the largest concerntration of Illinios population is.

Say like Michigan State University, I was inform that majority are from the Detroit Metro area. It differes largerly with schools within Ohio, California, Pennslyvania, Florida, Wisconsin, Texas etc…

What schools would one recommand for me… I’m interested in:

First I’ll mention my top choices

 1. Michigan State University
 2. University of Michigan- Ann Arbor

Sorta have an ideal of school types I like?
Other detials such as… large university, college town, good/ active greek system, student body of 30,000+, ranked in top 100, school spirit, etc…
