Fraternity costs?

Ball park, what are dining and social fees at frats?

Nobody knows? Any fraternity guys at all, what have you paid for food and social? Just trying to get an idea abouit fees, because my son seems to be interested. thanks…

My son just got his fall semester statement. Meals, dues, social, etc. was about $1800 for the semester. He does not live in the frat house.

I would love for someone knowledgable to give us a brief “fraternities for dummies” overview of how costs work. There are dues that every one pays, right? What are the other costs and how do they different for kids who live in dorms and eat at dining halls versus kids who either live in the frat house or eat at the frat house. Are there fraternity websites that outline the dues or do you find out about that during rush?

most frat houses require you to eat there frequently, as far as i know.

Great idea, rj. If $1800 for social and food is average, it doesn’t sound like a bad deal, if you compare to the fall meal plan of around $1750 (pretty close). Granted, not all meals are eaten at the frat, so there are more food costs, but it doesn’t seem unreasonable. Plus you get all the social.

By the way, If you buy the meal plan, and end up pledging a frat, Food Services transfers the monies for the meal plan to the frat’s dining fee. Any difference is given to the student in Flex Bucks. Say you invested in the meal plan at $1750, and the frat dining is $1200, you get $550 in Flex Bucks to use whenever. Food services requires the Frat to fill out some paperwork for the transfer of monies.

Son had to pay for the meals but had a class that conflicted with meal time at the house. This happened multiple semesters. The pledge semester GPA was bad. He still is recovering from that. He did not live at the house which is fine by me, the place had electrical issues and the roof leaked.

I remember paying more for dues/parlor fees/social stuff than school cost. 1900 seems to ring a bell, plus a $400 surcharge to repair the house.

If I could redo the meal plan would have done declining balance, carrys over from year to year.
