Hello all, I am trying to transfer into Gtown for many reasons.
My problem is that I am about to join a Fraternity at my school and i know Gtown does not have traditional social fraternities. Due to the tough pledging season, i expect to see my grades drop slightly. This hopefully will not be a problem for my application because my last semester gpa was a 3.9. Im just wondering how the office of admissions at GTown would view a fraternity member. Would they think negatively of me and hurt my chances because Gtown does not like frats, or would they see is as me being active in my school and therefor help my chances for admissions. Thanks for any responses.

I think it'd help, but not to the extent that it would make up for a drop in grades.

It WILL hurt your chances.

It's not as though you're taking a challenging course load or you're doing an extra-curricular with any sort of redeeming academic quality.

You're pledging a frat. Your grades will drop because frankly, you're going to be drinking and being the frat's b**** for a semester.

If you want to transfer to a school without frats, why would you put yourself through pledging?

Ignore the greek-haters.* Don't worry about it.* First of all, G'town is not going to look down on you being in a fraternity.* Just because the school chooses not to have them on campus does not mean they hate everything they stand for & all who belong!* And it's perfectly okay to do things in college that you enjoy.* Some people spend their entire lives doing only those things that will help them achieve a goal, choosing to forego what they consider to be frivolous.* Other people want to have a balance of working hard to achieve a goal & doing what they enjoy.* I am in favor of balance.* Work hard, but do things you like.* This is your LIFE ... live it!!! :)

Like I said on your other post in the GTown forum, I'm a greek applying to GTown as well.

I would think that they'd look favorable on your getting involved, but not so much on the declining GPA. I think being a part of a fraternity and overcoming odds and set backs is one of the great things for young men/women (sororities). However, the fact that you're a pledge kind of changes things in that you're not really a leader and you're as Kash_Money said a "b****" of the brothers.

While I've been a member of a fraternity since my first semester, I've found other ways to get involved and become a leader besides the fraternity which plays a very minor role in my life. I mean I know what you're going through because I didn't have the best grades that first semester. However, since then I've applied myself and become involved in other things that provide me with intellectual support.

It's a give and take, but overall I don't think GTOWN will look down on you for being in a frat. They will be more concerned about your falling GPA. It's a give and take.

i am a brother of the pi kappa phi fraternity and i am applying to GTOWN for sophomore transfer...i pledged my first semester and pulled off a 3.94 while also interning on capitol hill and writing for the school paper...don't worry about your GPA, your fraternity will understand and respect your devotion to your studies. after all, fraternities are evaluated by their IFC in part by their cumulative GPA. one of the brothers of my chapter also transferred to GTOWN after his freshman year last year too, its not remotely unheard of.

out of curiosity, where do you go to school and what are you pledging?

I'm far from a "greek-hater". I go to a predominantly Greek school, and have no problems with fraternities. In fact, I even considering rushing before I decided I wanted to transfer.

And yes, I'm sure Georgetown doesn't have a negative predisposition towards applicants in frats, and may even look favorably upon it as a way of getting involved. However, that would only be if you maintained your GPA.

Your grades dropping because you pledged is not a good thing when applying to a school like Georgetown, nor will it suffice as an even remotely plausible reason.

The thing is, i am taking a much more challenging courseload this semster. I have already decided that if the whole grades thing becomes a problem, i will dropout of the fraternity and it wont be a big deal. The reason i want to join the frat is because all the brothers are really cool and im very close with most of the pledge class already. If i dont get into Gtown, which is a very big possibility, then i would have wanted myself to have pledged a fraternity. And being a pledge sucks at times, but "its the funnest time you'll never want to have again". Its just an opportunity to become very close with some friends. Im a student at Tulane University in New Orleans, and im pledging Kappa Sigma. I live in the Big Easy right now, Mardi Gras coming up, so itd be pretty obvious to anyone in admissions that i would be drinking anyways. I think it will be for the best, but i guess only time will tell

would georgetown see your second semester grades anyway? you wont get your grades until late may and the decisions arent made until late april.
