Fraternity Rush at Dartmouth

The hazing, from what I hear, depends on the frat. Psi U, Tri-Kap, and AD have pretty significant time commitments for the pledge term (it’s like taking an extra class or more), and it can get pretty bad. Nothing to the point of hospitalization, but it is what you would think college frat hazing would be…

But basically apart from those three, it’s not too bad.

On that note, I know non-drinkers in both AD and Psi U, and they are both happy in their houses…their brothers know they don’t drink and they respect them for it. Maybe some light ribbing and stuff, but being in a house is about more than alcohol.

Especially for Psi U pledge term was a huge commitment though…the psi u pledges all disapear over their pledge term…academic commitments, sports and pledge stuff, and not much else.

While your son won’t have to worry about physical harm, pledge term can be a trying experience. Most of it involves get really drunk 3-4 times a week with your pledge brothers. Yes, you can be a nondrinker during pledge term, but your alternative won’t be any better, usually prune juice or something like that. Of course, that depends on the house.

I’ve heard some horror stories about pledge term, but I don’t know how much truth there is to them, so I won’t go into it here. If they are true, I’m absolutely disgusted what people are willing to do in order to be considered cool for 3 years.

But parents, I hope you don’t believe that your children are telling you EVERYTHING about pledge term. I’m not saying that anything terrible happened, but you probably would be better off not knowing some of the things your children left out of their stories.

It’s always very hard on people academically. Many people opt to take an easy load of classes, so they won’t have to worry about pledge term affecting their grades.
