Fraternity ?

Son is currently at Minnesota state university-Mankato. He is currently enrolled in the Mechanical engineering program and he was interested in joining a fraternity. He is having a tough time making a decision. We ( Son and I ) wanted to know, which one would look good on a resume. The choices he has are :-

Delta Chi - ΔΧ
Lambda Chi Alpha - ΛΧΑ
Phi Delta Theta - ΦΔΘ
Phi Kappa Psi - ΦΚΨ
Sigma Chi - ΣΧ
Sigma Nu - ΣΝ
Tau Kappa Epsilon - ΤΚΕ

Which one would be the most prestigious one. He is also interested in the social aspect of it (parties, activities and stuff)

Tau Kappa Epsilon is the largest in the country I think. Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Phi Kappa Psi, and Lambda Chi Alpha are also among the largest. So one would think that large fraternity = more opportunities, but I am not so sure that is the case when there are tens of thousands of members in the fraternity, because then you aren’t very significant. Perhaps more closely-knit fraternities are more advantageous, but it is all very subjective.

The chapters at each university are all very different from one another, so your son should just make a decision based on his own perception of the people in the fraternity and their reputation on campus.

You should join a fraternity because of the connection you have with the brothers, otherwise it won’t be a good experience. Never make a decision about going greek about anything other than brotherhood/sisterhood. Each chapter is different, too. Please don’t think greek life is all about resume building. As a greek, I find that very shallow.

I would advise against putting a (social) fraternity affiliation on a resume. You are far more likely to run into somebody that was in an opposing fraternity than you are to run into a brother during the hiring process.

Putting a business/engineering/medical fraternity on your resume is a different topic.

Frats can be good to make connections in life that can later lead to job opportunities, but that has nothing to do with your resume.

He should rush whichever ones he’s interested in, see which ones he receives bids from, and then make a decision out of those. No point in stressing over fraternities he might not even get a bid from.

Holy helicopter parent!
