I was wondering what the frat scene is like at Dartmouth. What are the general attitudes of the students towards the frats. Also, what are the reputations or stereotypes of each frat? which are the most popular/fun/most laid back?

I wrote a long message about this I while back...wish I kept it. Overall the campus is very friendly and everyone recieves an email where the big parties are every weekend night. Also, there are many smaller gatherings at individual houses, often they are pre-parties for the big parties. Overall the scene is totally inclusive and everyone is welcomed anywhere, I have never seen such a friendly greek scene in this regard at any other school.

The downside is some of the popular frats (a couple of the jock ones) aren't too aware of diversity. On the flip side there are many many other options out there, and almost all the houses get a ton of people at their parties.

Here's a quick synopsis of the houses, these are stereotypes so please don't be offended. Clearly there is more to a house than a big stereotype.

Alternative Houses:
Tabard - alternative /hippyish, on frat row, friendly and open meetings
Panarchy - Hipster/ Raver, farther, more isolated

Jock Frats:
Theta Delt - Biggest jock frat, mostly athletes, everyone is 6'4
Heorot - Not very diverse, winter sports, more random people and laid back than Theta Delt
AD - Soccerish, more random and Animal House than two above
Chi Gamm - On frat row, most random and laid back of the jock frats, least "jocky" and much more diverse.

Preppy:
Psi U - Conservative and elitist
SAE - Preppy but not elitist at all

Nice Guys:
Alpha Chi - VERY laid back, comfortable, never leave their house. TIGHT community
Sig Ep - Nice guys, big house, diverse, welcoming.
Tri-Kap - Full of diversity, very laid back, good parties, mecca of the urban kids

Others:
Bones Gate - the laid back druggy "animal house"
Phi Delt - "Cool kids" who act like animal house

Sigma Nu - Band frat, nerdiest of the mainstream frats, good 80s party.
Zete - Sort of out of commission, but they have their own scene still

Dungeon and Dragon houses (Not mainstream so I dont really know much about them at all, they have their own little worlds):
Alpha Theta
Phi Tau

THE coolest house on campus...not that I'm biased because I'm a brother there or anything...

Oh and you left out GDX (football frat) and put in Panarchy, which technically isn't part of the Greek system.

put in Panarchy, which technically isn't part of the Greek system.

Neither is Zete haha, just kidding

Whoops yeah I forgot GDX. I included panarchy, because even though it technically isnt part of the system it does have its social role on campus as practically an alternative frat.

You also left out the Alphi Phi Alpha fraternity (I hope we are not just having a case of selective memory)

I left them out because I forgot ( I just mentally went up and down webster avenue and wheelock). They don't have a house so their social presence isn't nearly as big as it could or should be.

I'm a class of '10 RD applicant...and those two frats seem pretty cool. Any more information about 'em?

The frats just completed their fall rush and gace out bids

Sig Ep @ Dartmouth

They are next door to each other on Webster ave. AXA have brother "families" and all of them keep in touch tightly even after graduation. But they never leave their house and would acknowledge their own "laziness" in terms of branching out. There is pressure to hang out there though. Its very open and comfortable, some girls like it for this reason.

Sig Ep is still tight, but its huge. There isn't nearly as much pressure to hang out, so for someone who doenst drink or care too much its a good house. There are usually many campus leaders in the house, and many kids who otherwise would probably not be in a frat. A very welcoming place to hang out.

Dartmouth Review's synopsis of the frats:

For once I actually agree with the review, its a well written and accurate synopsis. Although a few details are left out, and less important things are overemphasized. For example Tri Kap IS the most diverse house on campus with some of the best parties, and its history is largely irrelevant.

Go Sig Ep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Sig Ep...see you guys at homecoming.. Im way too old for this but I was at a party last night in NYC and about 25 '02, '03, '04s I know are coming up so why not...Dartmouth is a bond for life...we all were talking about how no matter where you go or what you do Dartmouth people will always be there for you...we are a cult and we love it

does "AXA" = Alpha Chi Alpha?

I think it's funny you say SAE isn't elitist at all. Their facebook profile for their group talks about their boats, popped collars, and 20+ people are in the group "I'm richer than you'll ever be." I would say SAE is actually known for being the most elitist on the entire campus. I really like it there, though, lol. Generally...

Actually by elitist I meant snobby, sorry. Yeah they are full of trust fund babies but overall its much less "richer than thou" than Psi U.

Can anyone elaborate on the "nice guy" frats?
