So. Since Phi Kap just got suspended until 2012, I figured I'd bring up a topic that's been on my mind for a while. I'm part of a sorority for which hazing is unheard of, and I'm curious what other students know about hazing within other GLOs. I hear rumors a lot... things like KD forcing their new members to stand on washing machines and then circling the parts of their bodies that jiggle (UGH).

I'm most curious about this because my BF is likely coming to Vandy next year, and is very hesitant about joining in Greek life because he's not a drinker and doesn't want to be hazed. As far as I know, Phi Delt and BYX are the only frats where drinking isn't pushed, and even BYX was brought up on hazing charges. What do other students know about hazing within frats (and soros, if you feel like sharing)? Are there any that you're fairly certain do NOT haze or push drinking? Thanks!

most frats haze. that’s the sad truth. BYX’s “hazing”, however, is not really cruel stuff, it’s more bonding activities for the pledges. Many of them have told me that it is really fun usually. My sorority doesn’t haze, unless cookies and presents are considered hazing. I’ve heard rumors that other sororities haze but nothing that’s been confirmed, so I’m kinda skeptical.

I’m a recently initiated member of a sorority commonly stereotyped as “lower tier” (not that any of us give a crap. we know we’re cool) and nothing even close to anything resembling hazing occurred whatsoever.

what about frats? what happened that Phi Kap was suspended

lol… a disciplinary action and they got ****ed and burned some of their furniture, or at least that’s what someone told me. like that was going to improve anything. Now they’re suspended for two years. ^.^

like… wut.

Cookies and presents!? That sounds like the best hazing ever! Haze me!

Hi-

I attended Vandy from 1987-1991. I was in a sorority. There was no hazing and I didn’t hear of any hazing at other sororities.

My husband attended Vandy undergrad from 1986-1990 and honestly, I can’t imagine being in a Frat if you aren’t a drinker. There is heavy drinking and hazing, at least there was when we were there. However, there are other service groups and organization (like APO, I think) that he could be a part of.

Things may have changed but I wanted to give you a fair heads up.
