How important are frats and eating houses to Davidson's social life. I'm not really interested in joing a frat and it seems like Davidson has a high frat participation % so i just wanted to know if it was difficult to not be a part of one or if the greek life was too overwhelming. thanks

There are actually plenty of people who don’t join fraternities or eating houses…and they have just as much fun! All parties are open here (semiformals are typically closed from 10-12, but open after midnight), so you are always welcome to go to the parties, even if you’re not in the organization hosting them. The Union also several events a week (especially on the weekends) that are there for the people who don’t just want to party. The Union has had ice cream socials, laser tag, pottery painting, giant inflatables (jumping castles, etc.), indoor snowball fights, concerts (Akon is coming in a few weeks and in previous years, they’ve brought Deathcab for Cutie, Jason Mraz, the Black Eyed Peas, the Fray, and more), school-wide games of Assassins, contra dances, and much, much, much more.
The students here who are not in PCC (Patterson Court Council) organizations like the eating houses, fraternities, Black Student Coalition, or sororities, are not in them because they’ve chosen not to be, and are generally involved in several other of the hundreds of clubs and activities we have here.
Also, there’s no “social division” between those who are in organizations and those who are independent of them. Many people, myself included, who are in PCC organizations have not only a meal-plan at their houses, but also with the school system. I take 8 meals at Rusk House and 10 meals at Commons (per week). I have lots of friends who are “independents” and spend as much time as I can eating with them and studying with them.
There’s plenty of pressure to join a house…upperclassmen will probably rush you. But it’s a welcoming kind of pressure, for the most part. Compared to other schools where the fraternities haze, Davidson’s scene looks a bit like a joke. The “rush” here is not nearly as intense or overwhelming as at other schools.

Davidson makes sure there’s always something for everyone, so don’t worry about this part :)
