We were up at Union this weekend loved it. Just curious about a few things.. First, are frats a huge deal at Union and is there other stuff for non-drinkers to do? Do people take advantage of that Minerva house system? And do students ever go into Schenectady for dinner, movies or anything else? Thanks so much for any feedback.

Frats are a big part of Union life but there are things for non-drinkers to do. However a lot of people who attend these functions have been drinking before hand. I transferred out after my first year there but the college does try to provide things to do other than party at the frats. Some take advantage of the activities but a lot don’t. It just depends on the experience you want to have. The Minerva houses are meant to be a step away from the frats and they have things going on constantly.
The area the school is in is not so great. While some students do go out into Schenectady most choose not to because the people are not all that welcoming. Union is in a not so nice neighborhood.

There is a lot of things to do that don’t involve drinking, and many of them are well attended by all different types of students on campus, drinkers and non-drinkers alike. Some people take advantage of the Minerva house system, but not many. Greek life is much more popular. Minervas are popular places to live, but Minerva events aren’t well attended. Heading out into Schenectady for dinner or movies is sometimes done. The older you get, the more likely you are to head off campus every now and then. However, in general students tend to stay on campus because Schenectady isn’t that great. There are some nice restaurants but the locals often make students uncomfortable. Also going out to eat isn’t in the average student’s budget. Going to the movies isn’t done as often because there are free movies played every week right on campus. The movies played were ones in the theaters a few months back, but they are free and us college students tend to be short on cash.
