Hi I'm freaking out about college right now Im a junior in high school and my grades are fine but I've only done one extra curricular. I was extremely lazy the first two years but I regret it so much now and hate myself for it. Anyway I've joined 3 clubs so far this year plan on doing two varsity sports this year as well and have a part time job is it to little to late. My GPA for my first two years is a 91.0 Also I tutor history.
Currently I have
A- AP US
A- AP English
B- Trigonometry
A- French
A- Chemistry
And have 32 hours of community service is this good enough to get into a good college I'm aiming for a SUNY school called University at Buffalo
Also I plan on writing a really good essay about the experience of being an immigrant in the U.S which I am.
What are my chances of getting into UB & are my extra curriculars good enough.

Is there a question in there?

SUNY Buffalo will admit primarily based on grades and test scores. I would not expect ECs to play a major role unless you are borderline.

What are your SAT/ACT scores?

I haven’t taken my SAT or ACT yet but I got 19-23 on my ACT practice but I know I can do better if I tried.

^ I would definitely try to score higher than that. About 25% of admitted students at SUNY Buffalo score below a 23, but your odds would be much better if you could raise it a bit.

Sorry I meant i scored 21-25 I thought it was 19 but I checked the sheet its 21-25 now what are my odds.

25 would be significantly better than 21. I think a 90+ average and a 25+ ACT score would give you very good odds.

thank you for the help

Agree that SUNY Buffalo is a by the number school and ECs have little meaning.

Just FYI – Schools that use ECs are looking for either:
- “well rounded/balanced” individuals (many LACs use it for this). Tutoring and paid work are viewed in a similiar context as school clubs and sports for the colleges that utilize ECs for this purpose.

“tie-breaker” reasoning. You will find this at the IVYs and other top schools where the vast majority of applicants have stellar number stats. If these schools went strictly by the stats, the number of apps exceed the number of seats for the class.

My advice – Only stay in those newly joined clubs & sports if you enjoy the activity. Don’t worry about it for college acceptance outcomes.
