Freaking Out About College Finances

Okay so I have about 12,050 through grants and scholarships. All I need is just 6,000 for my room and board (freshman requirement). How can I get the money I need? Should I apply for a loan, get an on campus job (I'm trying to), or try to find more scholarships? I'm so worried about it. I've been looking at different options day and night and even made a spread sheet to try to balance out my budget to see where I can cut costs.

Does any of that $12k include Direct loans? If not, you can get $5500 in Direct loans…call your school and ask for those.

you’re still going to need some money since the loan money is divided into 2 semesters. You do need to get a job as well to cover day to day expenses.

Can your parents help at all? Are you working this summer? I doubt you’ll find more scholarships this late.

I had to quit my job and I really can’t get any money from my parents since my sister is a teen mother with 2 kids. I’ve been trying to get a job but it’s not looking too good.

I wouldn’t count on earning the $6000 purely through scholarships, but do keep applying. Also, take out loans, like the Stafford Sub loans (and unsub if you still need more). Definitely use up all your federal loans before you look at private loans. Schools also often have work study opportunities, many times on campus, versus a job, which would require you to go off campus (unless you are commuting from home).

Stafford Loans are now called Direct Loans in the FA offer. THat’s why M2CK asked that question.

OP, is any of your FA offer titled Direct Loans? If not you can ask for a Stafford Loan to make up the difference.

You have posted before, I believe. What kind of aid package did your school give you? If it included Direct loans or Stafford loans, then you are pretty much loaned out in terms of borrowing in your own name. You can get $4K more in these loans, if a parent applies for PLUS and is rejected.

As for grant money, at this late date, I don’t have any suggestions. If you cannot find a summer job when you have all the hours of the day to work, it is going to be that much more difficult to find a job around campus accommodating your schedule. That may be the only way to come up with any money, however–working for it. Is commuting an option if you absolutely cannot come up with the money?

On another thread the op sort of lists her aid. it looks like all of the $12k is “free money”.

If so, Iheart needs to call her school tomorrow and ask them to include $5500 in Stafford Direct loans. That will cover most of the shortfall.

REPEAT - call your finaid office tomorrow and ask them about a Federal Direct Loan. It is a loan, but you won’t need to start paying back on it until you are out of college for 6 months. Talk to the finaid people so you understand what this means, but if it will work for you it is pretty quick, you will be approved and the money will deposit directly to the college against your tuition and housing costs. You can do this every year and the amount will increase alittle bit as you go through the years. The maximum available to you will apply only when you are in school full time. Your parents are not part of this, this is something you can do.

Good news! I was called for an on campus job interview and the person I spoke with seemed like I pretty much had it already. This job will definitely cover all my expenses for college.

Congrats on the job! But are you saying you have a job where you are going to make $6000 during the school year? That sounds like a lot to make while also managing classes and such! Or did you also get a loan?

Best of luck to you!

I found ways to cut down the costs and then I misread information about the dorm thinking it costs more than it actually does.

fantastic :)
