Freaking out because I didn't apply by the priority deadline?

Okay, so I had an issue with one of my teacher recommendations so I did not apply early anywhere. I have just found out that UMD is a LOT harder to get into regular decision and I'm heartbroken. I had my heart set on there and i also found out that you can't get a merit scholarship if you apply regular. Can someone please calm me down because I am honesty so heartbroken. Do I still have a chance?

First off, relax. Deep breaths.

Ok, Maryland only considers CR +M and the average is 1310, yours is 1360. Your uw gpa is 3.75, so also sweet spot given all those APs…!

So, yes, you definitely have a very good chance despite not applying by the priority deadline. The biggest shame is that you will not be considered for any special programs or merit scholarships… upon admission.

On the bright side, and there always is one, if you are admitted (because of course none of us on this forum can accurately predict that, despite our best intentions and well wishes) and you do attend, you can still qualify for honors programs if you continue to do as well academically in college (you can apply to the general honors college at the end of freshman year based on space availability, you can qualify to apply for departmental honors as an upperclassman, and there are also other specialized honors programs for upperclassmen that you would qualify to apply for as a compsci major (QUEST honors fellows is only open to engineers, CMNS (compsci falls under that) and business students), and there is Hinman CEOs entrepreneurship program (open to all majors interested in startups)…there are probably other programs in other departments but these are the ones that come to my mind (as the mom of an engineering student, which is a close cousin to compsci, sorta, haha).

As for merit scholarships, there are some that you are only eligible for AFTER you matriculate (so you didn’t miss out on these, but unfortunately these are not renewable so you have to apply each year, but whatever, it’s one application to be considered for all the scholarships - they match you accordingly …) go to this page http://celebratescholarships.umd.edu/celebration/listScholarships.php</a> and then click on the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences to see the plethora of scholarships available. I couldn’t tell you how much the awards are but I would not imagine they are very big (maybe ranging from several hundred to a thousand or two?)…but hey, better than nothing!

So, hang in there. Unfortunately, you will have to wait til the bitter end of March to find out, but don’t give up hope. I really don’t think all is lost. Best of luck!

You likely will be admitted in the regular decision round. You won’t be eligible for merit aid, but your stats are not high enough for any/much anyway. Good luck with your admission.

Another educated guess that you will get in. Please let us know when you hear. Good luck.
