Freaking out on Georgetown

Hi,
So
I have like a 91.3 unweighted GPA, no ranking, at a top school in New York State. I'm taking my SATs again this october..

my predictions (probably some improvements since march) is
math:780 Writing:730 Reading:660.

My ECs are DECENT. No crazy national USAMO or INTEL stuff, but i've dont lots of things.
BUT i REALLLY want to go to Georgetown.. It's just a perfect school for me.

Is there anything i can do to higher my chances now? (like w/ essays and recs, and stuff)
Oh and is getting a recommendation from the principal better than from a regular teacher? because i'm pretty close with the principal and he's writing it for me.

and my gtown interview is tomorrow.. I really want to get in. I have a pretty low chance right?

Explain why G’town is such a perfect school for you. That’ll make a difference. So why?

because I am very passionate about majoring in politics and having a career in politics. My future ultimate goal is to become an ambassador. The location is perfect for me and as i research more about the school, it makes me like it more and more. I’m just very sad that I probably can barely make it in to the college, and not the foreign service college. I checked their curriculum, and it has everything I am interested and passionate about, especially foreign language and philosophy classes. I love the location. It’s the center of politics and I can probably get very useful internships, jobs, and numerous opportunities there. I can probably meet and get close with lots of different people in similar fields and visions as mine and will possibly help me with my later career. If i get into this college, I will be taking another step towards my goal. I also love the city life, and the social life, in that although you study hard on weekdays(which is what i also want; i don’t want a party school) , on weekends you get to relax, and enjoy college life.

i LOVEEE georgetown, i’m actually pretty sure you have an amazing chance of getting in with those sat scores/your gpa seems pretty good! make sure you take sat 2’s also

my interview is coming up and i’m reeallly worried bc it’ll be my first interview but good luck with everything! i live really close to gtown and have taken classes there past summers, and the area is perfect for internships soo if you’re interested in foreign affairs, it’s the place to be
let me know if you have any questions!

honestly is 3.7 unweighted good enough for georgetown?

at a private school or public?

I’d say your chances are slim from looking at our school’s Naviance data - we’re in NY too. It shows weighted GPA’s but my son’s unweighted GPA is 95 and weighted one is 97 - he’s had a reasonably demanding schedule - 1 AP as a sophomore, 2 as a junior. Anyway, 47 kids have applied to Georgetown and only 5 have been accepted. Two were top students. 2250 SATs, and GPAs over 98, and there are quite a few kids with similar stats that were rejected. Three students with considerably lower stats SAT 1950, GPA 95 to 97 did get in. My guess is that they were basketball players or URMs.

I’m sure you know it, but GW and American are good alternatives if you don’t get into Georgetown. My son hated the GW campus, but in some ways liked Amercian better than Georgetown.

I just finished reading one of those college advice books. The author kept saying to pick “eight first choices”. And also wrote that if you fall in love w/ only one school, you’ll just compare that one to every other school out there. Then, the more you read about choice #1, the more you love it. Sounds right. Start looking at other schools more seriously and pick seven other first choices. G’town is a great school, but it’s not the only one.

^Easier said than done.

My first choice will always remain my first choice by miles.

You need look at other options. Check out American and GW. Heck even GMU is not a bad choice.

Among the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities, Georgetown is the top Jesuit university, though BC comes close. Although it’s much smaller than the others, the College of the Holy Cross is considered one of the best colleges in the country.

i too adore georgetown, and I visited it over the summer…but while I was there I also looked at GW. While GW may be a little less campus-y than Georgetown, they certainly seem to have amazing political science/international relations programs…I mean, the Elliot School is practically a stone’s throw from the State Department. So definitely apply there–while it may not be Georgetown, it is in the same area of town with the similar internship opportunities and awesome poli sci program!! I’m applying there as well…honestly, if that is where I ended up, I’d still feel awesome about my career options!

Sure, apply to other places but don’t feel like Georgetown is out of your reach! In your essay let them know that it’s not just about your desire to have a career in politics. Tell them the same things you said here about why the actual school is perfect for you. I felt the same way about Georgetown that you do, and attending Georgetown has made me love it even more. I thought I had NO chance of getting in, but you just have to try! Let us know when you get your acceptance letter!

I would seriously recommend that you not write an essay about how perfect Georgetown is for you. All the reasons you gave up above, like about politics and stuff, is all great; but how many times do you think that the gtown admissions officers have heard that? Its completely unoriginal. I go to Georgetown now, and I love it. in my essay i wrote about what i do for other people, about my fundamental philosophy of being a generous person. i didnt say anything about the school in it. just think about something that makes you unique, and don’t try to flatter the school either. if you do say something about the school, you want to frame yourself as an asset to the school, adding things about what you would bring to campus that’s unique, not just what you can take away from going to gtown.

hope this helps. to be honest, picking my essay topic was the hardest part of the essay writing process. i went through tons of cliche topics, things i thought they wanted to hear, and in the end i just wrote about something from the heart, and it paid off. i got into a ton of great universities off an essay that i myself thought was just ok. but it was me

You really cannot compare one schools Naviance data to anothers. The data is particular to that school. Every school is different which is why admissions is such a mystery and there is such a range of accepted stats. You also cannot assume that just because you go to a public high school that it is not competitive. Just apply and wait and see. You are in the range of possibility. Georgetown is a more complicated school. They would not insist on an interview if they weren’t. Good Luck

mister_ca is right. I didn’t mean to be so general in my comment. Again, good luck!
